Hadn't really thought about it before but with modern coding agents able to write verilog for you, why isn't your project running in logic at 100 MHz on a sub-$100 FPGA board??

Now a little sad because “incrementally better than RTX 5090, shipping in 2030” is not going to be viable in the real world and this would be a really cool project

Idk about some of this discourse. I don't show up at interviews with an iced coffee or any other beverage, but I do always accept an offer of coffee or water. Taking a sip is a good way to buy yourself a couple of seconds to respond - it's not weird or gross! www.inc.com/dave-kerpen/...

“They just started saying this recently because they're running out of money” is particularly pernicious in a thread that literally starts with Yud, but no! Amodei and Altman and Musk have been talking about x-risk for years! Since before anyone had heard of OpenAI, before Anthropic even existed!

Kinda amusing - noticed a couple of TOCTOU races in the Arm SCMI code, sent fixes upstream. Sashiko (kernel code review bot) said "This isn't a bug introduced by this patch, but..." and pointed out a leak on an error path... sashiko.dev#/patchset/20...

Taking the worst possible case for OpenAI - they built a system that when guided by mathematicians, if fed huge amounts of compute and stolen ideas from other researchers, produces a formalized resolution to one of the most significant open questions in mathematicians - isn't that still interesting?

Inference is a “normal” industrial process, in that the up-front capital cost of data center-class hardware is much higher, but having that hardware makes the marginal cost of serving inference at large volume much lower. There is something to the “token factory” framing that Nvidia pushes.

Some good replies pointing this out but I think it's worth emphasizing that data centers really have changed. A 2021 data center with 5000 × 10 kW racks isn't much different from “normal” light industry like a big metal fabricator. A 1 GW data center campus with 200 kW racks is a *LOT* bigger!

I feel like we need a new modern word to capture this specific insidious type of op - paying influencers to expand the market for a product - if it's not too awkward a coinage, perhaps “marketing” captures it?

Welp blocked but I do think “reverse Gell-mann amnesia” about AI among programmers is interesting to consider. We probably over-generalize AI capabilities from seeing it e.g. synthesize sparse ambiguous information to find subtle bugs - but a lot of non-programming tasks do seem similar!
000
Roland Dreier @rbd.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I think this is exactly backwards for a lot of AI users - expert programmers have seen AI tools get uncannily good at many difficult complicated tasks in our domain. So if anything the risk is in over-extrapolating capabilities to domains we know less well, where we can't vet the output as easily.
