Dem victories in '26 and '28 are necessary but there's no reason to think they will roll back the worst of the institutional, human, and political damage. Not because it's hard --it is-- but because they are a conservative institution. How could they not be after generations of a two-party system?

A possibly unpopular choice: my favorite book of hers has long been "Economy of the Unlost." I'm not qualified to give an opinion on the historical claims but that's almost irrelevant - as writing and thinking about writing and thinking it's as good as I've ever read. via @jessehixxx.bsky.social

I wouldn't want to live inside vim (although it's my day-to-day editor) but I think largish, complex, extensible single apps that are almost meant to work as shells provide an interesting set of tradeoffs, specially at the upper end of the learning curve.

Very much so! It'd be silly to apply the word "saint" to him but there's something in his simplicity of purpose and honesty of action that -mutatis mutandis- reminds me of Simone Weil or Wittgenstein. I'd say I like to be like him (like them) but probably not.

I've seen comparisons between Man City and the Clippers'. Mechanisms are similar but impact isn't: (1) the former is a foreign state sportswashing operation, (2) Clippers' global profile is negligible compared to Man City's, (3) the local sociopolitical centrality of football dwarfs the NBA's.

@jonawils.bsky.social is, besides the best sports writer _qua_ writer I know, one of the few who has never turned a blind eye to the ethics of clubs being funded by authoritarians and murderers, and to the impact of money on the game, but I don't know if I've ever read him in this cold, stark tone.

Also the fact that math was *developed* to be as effective as possible. We didn't do thousands of years of abstract nonsense [<- a technical, non pejorative term of art] and then suddenly found the world has the same shape. The reusability of tools is welcome, but those *are* tools. Just good ones.

One of my bugbears is that (1) this is endemic in public policy and both private and public finance, (2) it leads to a lot of unnecessarily bad outcomes, and (3) we have Bayes and computers so it's entirely on us.

I was born during the last military dictatorship, and Argentina deserves every bit of its reputation for corruption and shitty, feudal politics but let me assure you if a post-'83 president tried a tenth of what Trump is doing to the electoral system they would be out before a month.

The US has spent its post-Civil War history balancing democracy and not spooking the racists by letting non-Whites have meaningful votes and now Trump is pressing all those buttons at the same time. It's not troops at the polls, it might not be enough, but JFC that's a shitty way to run a democracy.

Just because "it's not as bad as it looks," "you can fight it later," "it's not massive" or 🤷 because the US has basically never had elections without some level of "voter suppression" [i.e. culturally accepted fraud] it doesn't mean it's not that. via @donmoyn.bsky.social @csissoko.bsky.social

And by "refined" I mean that to match AI discourse MbS would have had to describe NEOM as a final world-city, either or both Thomson's City of Dreadful Night and postapocalyptic utopian refuge, a self-aware invincible New Rome that must be built by its future slaves lest somebody else does it first.

Very interesting from @mehdighassemi.bsky.social and David Murakami Wood. I suspect this is a regime that extends beyond urbanism: the AI buildup, and underneath it the world economy as a retroactively causal nightmare/pitch/prediction, feels like a refined version of this dynamic.

Yeah, yeah, Paramount took over #StarTrekDay but they are too cowardly to acknowledge the truly important date: September 15, 1967 when "Amok Time" by Theodore Sturgeon planted on the hot sands of Vulcan a seed that would fundamentally change our culture. I'm tongue-in-cheek but not exaggerating.
