I get 40 mins of walking in every day just getting my kids to/from school (10 min walk, one way). I get another 10-60 mins of biking in each day if I have any errands to run. I don't have to carve out extra time bc I can choose active transportation. More Americans deserve to have this choice.

I really want more housing in the city and this is better than none. Affordable housing around here is especially needed. But the CAP framing was a bit heavy handed. There are many good features! Focus on those but let's be honest about what this housing can or cannot do in terms of climate.

There's a lot of "Water conservation (has) been designed to meet regional sewer district requirements" and "can provide opportunities for future partnership with Kent’s waste diversion and circular economy goals" greeenwashing kind of language in the only info that the city's shared.

But. This is on the very edge of town. Oh, you've got bike parking, fab. But this is not close to many non-retail jobs and our ped/cycling infrastructure out here is non-existent.

Ironically we just drove through this intersection & were commenting on how the sidewalks were under construction with no way for peds to go thru. It's Complete Streets work which is good but right now it's impassable. Also: took long enough. It's still the 4th most dangerous rd segment in CLE.

Every national park visitor center should have a poetry wall.
Wall reads CREATE A STANZA
speak on the remember
wishes for
sing
searching like
is memorable
along the Cuyahoga
waterfall
sloom
hike
IS
beautiful and free
towpath
Baskets below the poem read

'stay awhile,"

These cars are all going 35 mph+ in a 25 mph zone right at the edge of the 20 mph school zone.

Even if they just went the speed limit, it would greatly reduce the amount of water splashing us. But yeah, slow down and pull over if possible would be even better.

Amazing how a little rain makes the speeding and narrow sidewalk issues visible and...tangible as in I am now soaking wet after walking my kid to school in what is otherwise just light rain. This is what makes routes to school feel unsafe and walking feel untenable.
Narrow sidewalk and tree lawn as a car speeds by in a 25 mph zone, spraying a large amount of water on the sidewalk occupant, me.Just at the 20 mph to 25 mph school zone transition, cars speed by spraying water onto the sidewalk across a narrow tree lawn on a main street and primary route to school.

In Kent, they move it to daylight on a Sunday which I guess has fewer cars but is NO FUN. Fortunately we have a neighboring town where it is on Halloween at night and we just go there (too! ...there are many Halloweens here). As a fellow transplant to Ohio I approve of this petition✅

Today I was thinking about adding schools with aftercare to my map. Really hard to figure out and also random. Some of these elementary schools get out at 2:15 pm! What are working parents supposed to do? Just structural issues like this that come up again and again plus 30 schools just closed. 😥

Jen Mapes @mapesgeog.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yeah, for sure. That's why it's been tough to see that it's not really work here. I'm no school expert but the funding mechanisms aren't helping. School busing cuts for example.

I've been studying a district without neighborhood schools and am asking the opposite q. I mean, I know the answer. But I see many parents still go to the closest school which is not always public. Those w/ time & skill to navigate the "choice" system, & who have transport options, choose further.

I was interested in how, at least from a geographer's eye, this could easily have been in SF itself, but for a boundary line, with decisions to develop or not made by SF instead. But that boundary of Brisbane that runs northeast was enough to NIMBY up a storm. It's a huge devnt but seems inevitable.

I'm quoted in this SF Chronicle article about a planned housing devnt in Brisbane, a suburb of SF. The first thing I said to the reporter was "happy to talk to you but it's not a small town." A really fascinating case of how the *idea* small towns flavors development even in the largest cities.
