All three tads have front legs now! Here's pics of the oldest and youngest tads from today. The oldest tad is visibly smaller, and its tail is about 40% of the size of the youngest one, as it has not eaten for about 2 weeks now while it reabsorbs its tail, and changes its mouth type

some of the different coloured shrimp from my 7g cube. Getting a skittles mix of shrimp colours has created some pretty fun iSpy moments in the tank. I'd say about 15% of the shrimp are wild-type, while the rest have a veriety of fun colours and patterns. I'd recommend it!

An update on my office aquarium 🐟 I dont love the wood placement (need to add or remove a piece), but I'm liking the addition of the red tiger lotus, as I think the fish and shrimp feel bolder with the shade and cover it provides. Left is how it looks today, right is how it looked in December.

Lots to see here! This is a Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus). It is perched on a bivalve of some sort (no clue what), and in front of that there's some small, translucent tunicates. Pic from Anilao #MarineLife 🌿🐟 #Invertebrates
A white fish with a reticulated red pattern on it; there are also red spots on its flank and chin. It has a very long, tapered snout; the dorsal fin is erect and the spines are prominent. It is sitting on the algae-covered shell of an oyster or scallop; it is slightly open to reveal a dark blue mantle at the bottom of the picture. In front of the open bivalve is an array of tiny translucent blue tunicates.

Monday fishposting! I think this is a juvenile flatfish of some sort; I'm unsure whether both eyes are on the same side of it or whether that process has only just begun. Pic from a blackwater dive in Balayan Bay, Anilao #MarineLife 🌿🐟
A tiny, translucent fish. The spine and parts of the dorsal and anal fins and tail are readily visible, as are the eyes; the rest is translucent but some other structures (gut?) can also be seen. The eyes are at obviously different heights but it's unclear whether one of them has just started its rotation around the body, or completed it.

Surprised Eel Historian, PhD @greenleejw.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
So you're a medieval landlord, collecting property rent from your peasants in eels. How do you count them? Eels were usually counted in units called sticks (25 eels) -- possibly from the number of eels you can smoke on a stick at one time. 10 sticks of eels was called a bind. 🗃️🧪
Photograph of eels hanging on a stick for drying. The els are orange in color, and have been gutted. The stick passes through each eel at or near the head. There are 11 eels on the first rack, and another rack is behind them. The dark of the drying oven is like dusk in a cavern.

There are 11 eels on this stick, not 25, and it is a certainty that someone will point this out in the replies. The only logical assumption, then, is that medieval sticks were simply larger than sticks today, and that the historical processes of industrialization have made sticks a shadow of their former selves. Marx might say they've been alienated from their true selves since their value has been tied to capital enterprise. Any small boy will disagree, though. Sticks still retain their magic.

Perhaps in distant lands, untouched by modernity, there are free-roaming herds of sticks capable of holding the right amount of eels. Sadly, we here today must deal with the sticks that late-stage capitalism allows us. The enshittification of sticks is upon us.

European perch will follow around eels and wait for them to distrub prey then quickly rush in to snatch the food away from the eel. This is a learned behaviour showing fish aren't quite as dumb as you might think.
