All three tads have front legs now! Here's pics of the oldest and youngest tads from today. The oldest tad is visibly smaller, and its tail is about 40% of the size of the youngest one, as it has not eaten for about 2 weeks now while it reabsorbs its tail, and changes its mouth type

some of the different coloured shrimp from my 7g cube. Getting a skittles mix of shrimp colours has created some pretty fun iSpy moments in the tank. I'd say about 15% of the shrimp are wild-type, while the rest have a veriety of fun colours and patterns. I'd recommend it!

An update on my office aquarium 🐟 I dont love the wood placement (need to add or remove a piece), but I'm liking the addition of the red tiger lotus, as I think the fish and shrimp feel bolder with the shade and cover it provides. Left is how it looks today, right is how it looked in December.

made a little terrarium for a new jewel orchid (Anoectochilus roxburghl)! I love the dark green leaves on this guy.

whats the worst that could happen if you do it wrong? maybe you have to do it again a little bigger, but thats it. the consequences of failing are inconsequential. you should watch a few videos, and just patch the knees. here's some sashiko my partner did to patch the holes on my jean knees :)

the ranitomeya varabillis southern tadpoles have little legs now! they're so cute with their tiny little back legs. their colouration is also starting to develop. raising them over the past month has been super fun.

have you ever heard of aquascaping? in many of the high level aquascapes, the focus is on the plants and the artistry. The fish are secondary to enhance the feel of the aquascape, or completely absent.

Cryptocoryne balanse. They're pretty big plants, I'd say you need at least 40cm of height for them to look good. The stems are less intensely red in normal light, though.

Tanner was the one that inspired me to step up my vivarium game, and use more emergent growth and hardscape elements in my aquariums! I used elements from his crested gecko build and his fire bellied toad build to guide my first paludarium build back in 2022.

have you ever used the Finch app? It's a free self care app where you can do exactly this, but you also get a little finch to dress up and take care of, to motivate you to keep up your healthy habits.

Russetfin Topminnow my beloved. I just learned about you and I cherish you so much. I have never wanted to go to Florida before I met you but now I yearn for the sandy creeks of Ookaloosa County. 📷 Seth Patterson

if you are planning to contain the entire emergent section within the volume of the tank, i agree that it's too small. but if most of the tank volume was kept accessible to the frogs, with plant growth sticking out the top of the tank, it would be doable. something like this should be fine imo!

thank you! ive already made more changes haha, opening up the space a bit more and replacing the pothos with some philodendron micans after someone else suggested it. it's just fun to tinker. im looking forward to seeing it in a month!

Angie @mapcake.bsky.social · 27/12/2025
oo thats a good suggestion! i replaced it with some p. micans i had in the house. i think it'll grow in to be really nice, esp with the dark velvety leaves. thank you!

Angie @mapcake.bsky.social · 27/12/2025
im iffy on the pothos placement but the frog usually sleeps on the underside of its leaves, so i needed to include it somehow. he is currently surveying his new domain.

all done the paludarium renovation for now! i didnt originally want to include the big cork round thats filling up space in the middle, but it's the only reason the water doesn't drip audibly :( i also plan to remove the filter after the water clears up.

Angie @mapcake.bsky.social · 26/12/2025
here it is after the first round of planting! im currently struggling to control the stream of water so it doesnt make audible dripping sounds, which i hate. this is also a rescue mission for a crispy rabbits foot fern that was declining in the 30% ambient humidity of my home lol

heres what it looked like before. none of the wood was fixed in place so it really limited hardscape placement. and this tank doesn't get misted, so nothing grew on the dry upper half of the paludarium. it generally suffered from a lack of scale and nice details.

working on my last terrarium of the year! i am redoing the cinnamon frog paludarium to add a dripping water feature and improve the hardscape. ultimately i am doing this to add more frogs in the new year 🐸

new scape for the 7g cube! i was originally going to make it a blackwater scape but ended up with a normal one, just with a few botanicals sprinkled in haha. hopefully this one can be more self-sustaining during the 4 months of neglect it will inevitably experience during the field season lol

i also made a magnetic hide to make the empty height of the tank a little more usable for cowboy while the plants grow in. hopefully he fits through the opening lol
