Get in folks, we're building the missing middle, right here in Edmonton! Small-scale infill (5-8plexes in mature neighbourhoods) is now the single largest source of Edmonton's new housing supply. 22% of all homes permitted this year!
Line chart showing homes permitted by project type in Edmonton from 2009-2025. Single detached homes (dark blue) peak around 4,500 in 2012. 9+ apartments (light orange) spike dramatically to over 6,000 in 2024. Other categories—additions/conversions, backyard houses, duplexes, fourplexes, and larger multifamily units—remain under 4,000 permits throughout the period. Data source: City of Edmonton Open DataFour line charts showing homes permitted by neighbourhood type and project type in Edmonton from 2009-2025. Top left (Downtown): mostly flat, under 500 homes permitted annually across all project types. Top right (Mature): volatile orange line (9+ apartments) peaks near 3,000 in 2025; other project types remain under 500. Bottom left (Between mature and Henday): navy line (single detached) dominates, fluctuating 1,000-1,800; orange line (9+ apartments) peaks around 2,000 in 2024. Bottom right (Outside Henday): navy line (single detached) leads, reaching 2,700-2,900 in 2021 and 2023; orange line (9+ apartments) spikes to 2,500 in 2024. Legend shows seven project types in dark navy to coral gradient. Data from Jacob Dawang, City of Edmonton Open Data.

Is infill "destroying" Edmonton's neighbourhoods? Here are the facts: 📊 Only 1% of RS-zoned properties redeveloped since 2024 🏡 Half of new units have 3+ bedrooms 🚇 Density is clustering near LRT 📉 Most mature neighbourhoods have fewer people than 50 years ago #yeg #yegcc #yimby

You can tell a lot about how a city thinks of cyclists by where they allow dumpster bins to be placed. @thecityofedmonton.bsky.social has sadly failed the test. This could've been placed on the road as it's closed behind the bin anyway. Do better Edmonton. @edmontonanne.bsky.social #yegbike #bikesky
A large red dumpster bin completely blocking a bike lane adjacent to Churchill Square in Edmonton. It should be noted, this is right beside City Hall which makes it all the more stupid it was allowed to happen. It's nighttime in the shot and you can see lights on in a building in the background.

Did a 50km bike ride deep into Northern Edmonton. Crossed the Henday and back, watched the storms rolling across the sky, got rained on in the hydro corridor, saw the sun rising the whole time and did my longest ride ever (so far)! A good ride overall I'd say 😍 #yeg #yegbike
Grasshopper (my bike) posed by an early pink sunrise with trees silhouetted. There's thick clouds above and it's morning twilight. Did a long ride south trying out the MUP on 34 Ave. and holy shit is that area in red depressing. It's literally a car sewer due to the insane amount of car dealerships. Makes the area a shithole and then the intersection at 111 St. on that MUP is an absolute disaster to navigate through. #yegbike
An area circled out in red from Google Maps of 34 Ave. in Edmonton between 91 St. and Calgary Trail. A Google Maps view of the 34 Ave. & 111 St. intersection which is a nightmare to navigate as a cyclist. There's goofy gates blocking the multi-use path on the north side of the street so you have to awkwardly ride onto the train tracks if you forget to hit the beg button to switch the lights. I rode it at night and it was bad, can only imagine what it's like during the day. Strava data from my ride down south into Edmonton. Did a long exploration through the north of Edmonton at 1am and it is so beyond carbrained up there it actually shook me to my core. Ironically enough, there is so much potential to make it even more bikeable with just a bit of effort and getting rid of all the slip lane intersections! #yegbike
My boy Grasshopper (my bike) posing on the trail between 164 and 165a Ave. in the North of Edmonton. A shot of a multi-use trail, some grass and Castle Down Road with lots of street lights glowing and a semi-cloudy night sky above. Whatever idiot at @thecityofedmonton.bsky.social who thought putting a million of these hairpin turns into the 106 St. bike lanes should be fired immediately. Absolute design disaster and just asking to injure or kill a cyclist, especially cause this one is directly after an alley exit! #yegbike
A disastrous hairpin turn in a bike lane on 106 St. in Edmonton. It has a concrete curb with a sharp turn right, lane is straight for about 10ft before sharply turning left again. It does this many times along the entirety of the bike lane and is incredibly dangerous for cyclists.
