This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Really nice drawing of Phaeocystis pouchetii! It is an important part of phytoplankton communities across the North Atlantic. It can form massive colonial blooms there, which may become more prominent in changing high-latitude waters. 🌊🧪

I often hear people say that we need to include the Global South in CO₂ removal (CDR). I disagree. CDR is waste management and a bummer. Rich countries created this CO₂ mess and it’s our responsibility to clean it up. The Global South shouldn’t be burdened with this task.

🌊🧪 Marine snow particles sinking from the surface ocean are critical for deep sea food webs and the oceanic carbon cycle. How fast they sink determines how much carbon reaches the deep ocean, but measuring their speed directly in the field is a challenge in oceanography.
