That's really the core of it to me. Not many people are sensitive to or even aware of the vulnerabilities they're introducing to their lives when they accept a system for convenience that can be altered or shut off externally. And "vulnerabilities" includes "forcing user-hostile UI changes"

The fire in Plato's Cave has been updated to a 4k projector. Everyone can see the projector and knows its there but everyone is looking at the cave wall still because there's a new Marvel Movie on. Also we got a guy named Dave who has edibles we call him Edible Cave Dave.

Everyone keeps reaching for the “too big to fail” button because it is fundamentally harder for them to imagine what happens if it’s too big to succeed. The unique conditions in play make a bailout impossible. This is also an ideological bubble to the point I think it creates a schism in society.

Thinking about the time when I first got online 40 years ago - BBSs in 1986 It was also possible then to Get Off The Computer. Now we can't really Get Off The Computer. Many of us last Got On The Computer sometime in the 2010s. It's time to Get Off The Computer, not just Get Off On The Computer.

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue approaches Green. Green is wearing a chef's hat and holding an oven tray of something ambiguous.
Blue: What are you making?
Green: A concotion.
Blue: A what?
Green: I wanted to bake something, but I didn't have any of the ingredients so I improvised.
Blue: ...Is it good?
Green: No.

there aren't gonna be any more video games. all the ones there are now are all there will ever be. in a couple months all the app stores like steam and such will run out of digital copies, too. so keep good care of the games you've got, cause if they break, you can't replace them now

There's a lot of stuff we have done in the past which turned out to be a bad idea. So we stopped doing it. It's difficult for me to accept the inevitability of [things] knowing this. But I am worried there are not enough people standing up and saying "this is a bad idea" in 2026.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)

A sticker to place anywhere. Like hand dryers, toilet bowls, soap dispensers, alarm keypads, coffee machines, thermostats, pedestrian crossing buttons, BBQs, park benches, parking meters... As well as staplers, pens, potatoes, bricks, brooms, lunch, potplants and speed humps.
A piece of colourful corporate nonsense looking sticker stating NOW AI POWERED! Talk to me. Ask me to do things! with a happy little speech bubble computer-looking character, with shiny little AI stars and a space looking background in the middle. To be placed on things that look like maybe they could be AI powered, BUT ARE NOT.

bloomberg has a fun article today arguing that the Cybertruck is the biggest flop in automotive history. it includes this glorious graph.
A graph showing how the edsel and Cybertruck both performed based on their sales target and actual year one and year two sales. The edsel was expected to sell 200k units in its first year. It sold slightly over 50k, and less than 50k the next year

The Cybertruck had a sales.target of 250k in its first year. They sold around 40k, the next year they sold about half as many.

I’m tired of the myth of the “great lost musician” who made two albums and then vanished for decades. Newsflash: sometimes people do things for a while and then decide they don’t want to do it anymore. They just go do something else. It doesn’t mean they’re “lost” or it’s a sad or mysterious story.
