I am currently reading ‘The Concept of Evil’ by Marcus G. Singer (2004) and came across this. It puts racism in its rightful place, as evil, alongside genocide. Singer rules out “necessary evil” in his definition of evil. If something is necessary, it is not evil. Racism is never necessary.

I’m up to my eyeballs in philosophy at the moment, including an article by Kathy Wilkes on the relationship of ‘folk psychology’ and science. Any such recourse to “innate” human instincts needs to be treated as the steaming pile of bullshit that it most probably is, without needing lengthy analysis.

One thing is territory: 1949, 1967 or 1973? Some or none of the West Bank? Golan Heights? The other is citizenship: who can be an Israeli citizen? Can Palestinians come back to Israel, assume citizenship and (possibly) claim the homes and land that were taken from them when they fled the Nakba?

It’s not a matter of removal, though extremists would advocate that; it’s a matter of maintaining a significant Jewish numerical majority and retaining Jewish state power. There are Arab Israelis, and (non-citizen) Palestinians have been a useful workforce to exploit. None of this is controversial.

If you look at Israel’s constitution and laws, they’re written to ensure it remains a Jewish state. The UK could become a very different state, according to the “great replacement” folk. And there *are* countries that are straightforwardly racist about citizenship. Zionism is just another racism.

I worked for a contractor on HS2 until I retired last year. One of my clients had been a pupil of mine when he was 10. In our first meeting on the job, he said, “Hello Mr Wilson.” I told him that Malcolm would do now. Lovely young man, brought up well!

Two things: A bomb disposal artificer once joked to me that his kevlar suit was just to ensure his family had remains to bury. While working on the Crossrail project at Canary Wharf, I heard how we needed both horizontal and vertical radar scans of the site because of all the potential WW2 bombs.

We introduced 20mph zones in Oxfordshire and the numbers of people killed and injured on our roads has gone down even as the same figures in surrounding areas have gone up. Sorry to be a soggy liberal but I think that's a good thing.
