I was tempted to pirate HP, curiosity and all that. But @jessiegender.bsky.social is right - think of the amount of times HBO commented on GOT leaks and downloads, just as an example. They DO track these things, and even that drives interest. Let this show die. Trans people deserve better.

I cannot stress enough that ICE is acting the way cops have acted for years. These are just "starlight tours" for Indigenous teens applied to the rest of the population.

the average artist works really damn hard for generally pretty bad pay and/or bad working conditions but I think passionate people engaging in skillful work should be recognized and rewarded! this feels extremely obvious to me but maybe it's not anymore, in this productivity obsessed hellscape

sometimes it feels like a lot of normal people conceptualize an "artist" as a superposition of both A. a super wealthy fine art elite who does low effort abstract art nobody understands B. someone magically born with the art talent gene even though A is 0.000001% of artists and B is not a thing

They want to blur the line between what the "models" are capable of and what the software around the models is doing; they want to anthropomorphize the models as much as possible; they want to promote the idea that "the model" is wholly or mostly responsible for the system's output.

When Bluesky responds to complaints about its moderation with "You should use our composable moderation tools to do your own moderation!" and then also goes about removing moderation lists it doesn't like, it just sounds like they want users to act as unpaid moderators for them.

In one violent incident on August 1, immigration agents in CPD's 25th District station lot boxed in an ICE observer, ripped her from her car and moved her to one of their SUVs to detain her. We asked for security footage from that morning. It shows ICE agents in full view of local police:

OH. right! i get it now!

i get why AI is so depressing to me. because covid already shrunk my world to almost nothing, where almost all of my life revolves around socializing and watching videos on the internet (which is being ruined by AI) and creating creative works through coding (which is being ruined by AI), often using open source tools and libraries (which are being ruined by AI)

i already had so little and now even that is being rotted away before my eyes

the reporting on this stuff is a form of pareidolia. all this is explicable by a set of automatons stochastically exploring a state space and host environment with whatever predictive capacity an LLM affords them. absolutely no intent is required, they do not "know" what they are doing

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Do not get tricked into thinking EA, "AI safety", TESCREAL or whatever you want to call them are sui generis organic phenomena... they're just a particularly weird and offputting outgrowth of the base informing the superstructure, they're a sci-fi cult implementation of capital imperatives.

Almost forgot it was Sunday 13th #BadHabits #nun #smoking
Digital illustration of two women wearing catholic nun coifs and veils, jeans and black jackets. Their faces are covered in bandages and one has a bandaged eye, suggesting they have recently been in a fight. The closest is smoking a hand-rolled cigarette and looking at the viewer, while the other is rolling a cigarette of her own.

convinced some people's positions on trans issues can only be explained not by an active desire for trans elimination or fear of trans people and more for the idea that trans people don't have real problems. which is not rooted at all in material reality. so a pretty untenable position to have.

Why young people hate AI even more?
Lincoln Michel

The industry is incapable of any self-reflection, but it should be obvious why this would be the case. Older gens saw Big Tech innovations that changed people's daily lives for the better and/or were at least mixed bags. Personal computers, internet, mp3 players, smart phones, etc. Someone who is 18 has seen.... what? NFT scams and crypto rug pulls. Web 3.0 hype that went nowhere. Gig economy apps that exploit workers and still charge too much for poor service. Zuckerberg's metaverse. A bunch of crap that massively enriched some billionaires without seeming to improve people's lives. Why should any young person look at big tech companies hyping GenAI—who were all pushing metaverse/crypto/etc. a few years ago—and think it would help them?

Riley did a very good blog about this as a Library Science nerd that’s worth reading aftermath.site/google-searc...
And in this presumption, Google tries to narrow and direct my search behavior in a way that infuriates me as a library science nerd. No database is neutral, but they generally tend to stay out of your way. When you go to your local library catalogue, your desires (and your skill at using a particular repository) are what move you through, not the library catalogue nudging you toward what it thinks you should be searching for.
Google, uninvited, attempts to steer me down the path it boldly presumes I mean to go, in the process inherently attempting to limit the information I encounter by pushing me toward itself instead of actual results.
Google has always done this with its opaque and changing priorities, but that priority has changed from making websites conform to its whims to trying to force me to conform to its obsession with Al.
