The two hardest problems in Computer Science are 1. Human communication 2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important

I’d say this passage from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is spot on about AI…but that gives too much credit to the Mr. Prossers of this space understanding either A or B (the starting point or the destination). But they are definitely sure they want to be at point D in all of this. >

Many artistic skills — seeing, composing, making marks —transfer both ways across analog & digital (just ask @loish.bsky.social ) NOTE about gen AI: It can’t help you see unless you ask, it is limited and repetitive for composition, and won’t help you build skill in making marks at all.

Oof, that hurts to see that called animated. That should remain a term for human skill. Generated. It’s generated.

i gotta say one more thing having worked in animation for years now, calling this "animated" is a fucking mortal insult. completely get fucked. animation is a creator thoughtfully and painstakingly giving something life. this is fucking nothing compared to animation

So advice… When oblivious friends and loved ones send AI-generated shit for laughs and you kinda hate AI-generated shit (not because you’re out of touch but because it’s unethical technology mainly used for unethical behavior), what do you respond? Note: They don’t want a lecture or convo.

UX thought of the day: The more a product or service challenges your users' convictions, or demands concessions to fit into their lives, the more open they become to alternatives...including ditching the fundamental "hook" that is at the root of their loyalty to it.

saw this on twitter, Stephen Worth made some extremely good points about what originality is animation production design these days and how nostalgia sometimes passes this point of no return in terms of relatability... ...and what it means to be a consumer vs a creative as an animation artist

If you want to write heroes in the year 2025, you have to decide what they stand for, and then stand for it. The mealy-mouthed, offend-no-one approach no longer works. People respond to the Walter Whites bc you can put truth in their mouths. So put truth in the mouths of the good guys.

Using AI tools where judgment is needed is hiring someone who sounds good but can’t distinguish between correct results & making things up, lies about their expertise, and hides their sources so you can’t independently confirm what they say. I think about this every time I see an AI announcement.

As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).
Reproduction of excerpt from Timothy Snyder's book ON TYRANNY:

"1. Do not obey in advance.
Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do."

What do you see when you see a bird? Is it the grace of its flight? The intelligence in its gaze? The sharpness of its beak? The softness of its down? Each of us has been gifted a way of seeing birds, unique to our eye alone. When we are in the woods together, I can see my bird, but not yours. But what if we draw our birds for each other? And the next time either of us is in the woods, we find our capacity to see has grown? Your drawing can teach me to notice strength, softness, swiftness, grace, I otherwise would miss. It does not need to be a "good" drawing. It has energy and life simply because it is yours. What abundance, to be surrounded by the drawings of other people! Each overlapping in ways, but at their core, inherently unique. Each one, in its own small way, the gift of sight. Making our perception of the world a little sharper, brighter, deeper.Ours is an age where, increasingly, capital would like to teach us how to see birds. Smooth, flat, digestible. But real nourishment will always come from each other. I want to see birds the way people do. I want to see birds the way you do.

With all of us coming here to Bluesky, we are all essentially hitting a big reset button. Twitter promoted a lot of toxic unhealthy traits in the pursuit for clout thanks to its awful algorithm. Here, those toxic fucks don't have an algorithm to push their bullshit. This is a huge chance for us.

I feel the same way about this as I feel about people that are mad that they can’t copyright their generative AI results built from shady sources (which is nearly all of them today).

The best way to ensure generative AI works for humanity is to not afford it the same privileges as human efforts. *applause* Read that with extra emphasis on “for”, plus the implicit understanding that “humanity”includes the hidden people who create the source and those who help it operate.

Tried Spotify’s AI DJ and it demonstrates how a human-alike cannot fix artificial content choices. A DJ monologue does NOT bridge how jarring it is to swap from a chill brunch-ish playlist (Air) to trap (Lil Yachty). *not that “trap brunch” can’t work as a thing via the skill of an actual DJ
