The one thing history isnt is "set in stone". As to 1970s - whose history? The % of GDP that was wages was higher in the 70s than the next decades - in other words much of population did quite OK in the 70s compared to say shareholders. Helps explain why my dad could buy a house on a single wage.

Maybe it was an earlier incarnation of Clarke that remembers. As he was just a bairn in his current incarnation in the 80's I will put him right. Thatcher was a disaster. Many are still suffering today as a result of her actions. Hopefully the Tories will remain in political obscurity.

Quite. I remember things very differently - because I was working through the 70s, so I was actually there, living through it. And you’re absolutely right. Thatcher was the architect of much that we’re still trying to put right today.

Born 1966 - Thatcher killed hope and took away opportunities - she was a handbag of hate and tarnished the Tories with exactly what they are showing themselves to be - Toxic. They care for no-one but themselves/friends/the rich - never voted for them, never will - they are the suited worst of us.

Annoys me greatly that the truth - Thatcher (with Howe) was a failed economic experimenter with a crackpot theory that sent interest rates into the stratosphere - never gets an airing!

I was born in 1968. I remember Thatcher selling off everything in sight, wasting north sea oil revenue, selling council houses without replacements, decimating industries without replacement jobs sowing the seeds for Cameron/Osborne for Brexit/austerity....

Its unlikely Simon Clarke has bad memories of the 1970s as he was born in 1984. This helps to explain why he forgets a recession made worse by Thatcher driving interest rates up with her uneccessary monetarist policy. The only thing that saved the tories was the Falklands war & North Sea oil.

It isn’t. But taxing the rich is not the answer. Treating government like a household that is funded by taxation is the problem. Government creates fresh money every time it spends. This has a knock on logic. MMT

Centres where when you retire you go along and you're signed up for everything you're entitled to and all other help is explained. Following on from pension reform there needs to be action on closing tax loopholes and offshoring wealth. I'm certainly no economic expert but Burnham doesn't want to

It was a truly great speech but let's see if Labour deliver. Pension reform has been needed for a long time but there also needs to be official measures put in place to assist the poorer pensioners and make sure they claim everything they're entitled to. There should be local drop in (pop in?) 🧵

The pension triple lock is out, and a National Social Care service is planned. What I once thought was a do-not-touch subject was manhandled by Andy Burnham - but will the risk pay off? After a very optimistic, being honest, brilliantly delivered speech, is there a bit of room for hope again?

Black text that reads:

229 new affordable homes are coming to the Bronx.

We just broke ground on Sol on Park:
• 80 homes for current NYCHA residents
• 69 homes for formerly homeless seniors
• 79 homes for low- and middle-income seniors
• 8,000 sq. ft. of community space, including a health and wellness center

This is what’s possible when we invest in NYCHA and use the power of government to build a City where New Yorkers come first.

And this one, from 1975:
The Rape of Mr. Smith
In the following situation, a holdup victim is asked questions by a lawyer.
“Mr. Smith, you were held up at gunpoint on the corner of First and Main?”
“Yes”
“Did you struggle with the robber?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“He was armed.”
“Then you made a conscious decision to comply with his demands rather than resist?”
“Yes.”
“Did you scream? Cry out?”
“No, I was afraid.”
“I see. Have you ever been held up before?”
“No.”
“Have you ever GIVEN money away?”
“Yes, of course.”
“And you did so willingly?”
“What are you getting at?”
“Well, let’s put it like this, Mr. Smith. You’ve given money away in the past. In fact, you have quite a reputation for
philanthropy. How can we be sure that you weren’t CONTRIVING to have your money taken from you by force?”
“Listen, if I wanted –“
“Never mind. What time did this holdup take place, Mr. Smith?”
“About 11:00 P.M..”
“You were out on the street at 11:00 P.M.? Doing what?”
“Just walking.”
“Just walking? You know that it’s dangerous being out on the street that late at night. Weren’t you aware that
you could have been held up?”
“I hadn’t thought about it.”
“What were you wearing at the time, Mr. Smith?”
“Let’s see … a suit. Yes, a suit.”
“An EXPENSIVE suit?”
“Well – yes. I’m a successful lawyer, you know.”
“In other words, Mr. Smith, you were walking around the streets late at night in a suit that practically advertised
the fact that you might be good target for some easy money, isn’t that so? I mean, if we didn’t know better, Mr.
Smith, we might even think that you were ASKING for this to happen, mightn’t we?”

fractured right-wing can only be a good thing for the country. Yes, that might be idealistic, and no, I don’t expect everyone to sit around singing kumbaya - but positive and collaborative relationships from the centre to the left of politics is what we will have to do in the next few years.

As a side note to this: The best thing that Andy Burnham’s Labour Party can do right now is reach out to both Ed Davey and Zack Polanski. Whether he needs them for a coalition after the next GE or not, now is the time to get both the Lib Dems and Greens on board - especially around care.
