The campaign of educational censorship sweeping Texas and other GOP-governed states in the name of “free speech” and “diversity of viewpoint” in many ways exceeds the worst of the McCarthy Era (gift link obvs) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
You have to go back to the loyalty oath cases of the Cold War period to see relatively analogous situations where the government was trying to silence academics with viewpoints that they didn’t like,” Emerson Sykes, an attorney with the ACLU, told me. “But even in those cases, we did not see the sort of brazen attempt to ban particular ideas or ideologies and scrub them from the public record or from public education.”

My favorite kind of Saturday: cool enough to sleep with the windows open, wake up and it’s light out (compared to the week when I wake up and it’s dark), kids/dog still sleeping, hot cup of coffee, alone with my thoughts to post on a social platform. May we all be blessed with more of these days.

That is not true. There is a court case about exactly this, involving specifically the NYPD, called Lozito vs City of New York. They did not intervene to stop a stabbing spree, and the court ruled that they have "no special duty" to protect anyone from violent crime.

The headline refers to "exaggerated portrayals of one candidate as a con artist and the other as a drunk"; the article then spends a lot of time detailing a single incident, which has been widely exaggerated beyond all proportion and recognization, and finally turns to Ramaswamy's career exploits, which are by no measure being exaggerated beyond defensible arguments as to their social impact. Why couldn't this article be accurately headlined: In Ugly Fight For Ohio Governor, Exaggeration of Single Personal Incident Is Pitted Against a Plutocrat's Career and Its Consequences. Concerned readers are eager to know.

I am reminded of the Discworld bit about "What if he's a good king?"
A selected quote from "Men at Arms" by Terry Pratchett

“But that’s not right, see? One man with the power of life and death.”

“But if he’s a good man—” Carrot began.

“What? What? OK. OK. Let’s believe he’s a good man. But his second-in-command—is he a good man too? You’d better hope so. Because he’s the supreme ruler, too, in the name of the king. And the rest of the court…they’ve got to be good men. Because if just one of them’s a bad man the result is bribery and patronage.”

I love libraries, but I’m a little sad that all of the books are Building and Engineering and such and none are novels or poetry or philosophy any other less directly practical topics. It feels like the same fight we are still in, trying to get Power to see value in beauty for beauty’s sake.

If basic human rights are predicated on whether someone committed crimes (see the "except as punishment for a crime" clause in the Thirteenth Amendment), then you create perverse incentives for those in power to create as many "criminals" out of the opposition as possible. Prisoners are humans.

It was extremely touch-and-go, and still was when play wrapped up, with one player downed and two more pretty hurt, but lots of minions cleared. Unfortunately, the big boss has loads of health and a very nasty attack, so whether I will preside over my own children’s TPK remains to be seen.

Yesterday’s weekly D&D game with the kids was more exciting than initially planned. Ina classic blunder, the party divided, with two players choosing the route I’m pretty sure the module writers intended (the door was open!), and the rest of the party flinging themselves directly into the big boss.

I held back from starting T. Kingfisher’s Astarion after reading so much vitriol from the Reddit crowd and then seeing a content warning at the beginning that gave me pause. I shouldn’t have worried. I’m 3/4 through and it’s charming, as I should have known. Astarion remains a dastardly delight.

I used to have a running joke with my children that I was so proud of them I should walk around the neighborhood and go pick them up from school wearing a t-shirt with a giant photo of them. It was a joke because the mortifying implications are as obvious as the behavior is unbalanced.

"Honey, wake up, the new Council of Trent just dropped."
Nicolò Dorigati, Opening session of the Council of Trent in 1545. Painting showing figures in a high room with a blue arched ceiling. Paintings of saints on the walls and an altar with crucifix at the center of the image. This is flanked by bright orange/red seats with bishops who continue towards the foreground of the painting. At the very foreground and background observers in darker clothes/robes congregate. Several look back towards the painter/viewer.

Educational corruption is a parasite that is killing public education. Students are lured away to experimental models that pay teachers less, make big promises, and have few to no regulations to keep them in check. You should hear some of the stories about what’s going on in these charter schools.

Yes! Our district in Texas is asking for a bond to pay teachers’ salaries for the first time EVER this year, because so much money has been siphoned off to private and charter schools that the state is no longer providing enough funds to just pay our highly-qualified, dedicated staff.
