The Sick Times @thesicktimes.org · 30/06/2026
As of mid-June, a summer COVID-19 wave appears to be slowly starting in parts of the Southern U.S. Disease levels are still low across most of the country, though, and it may be a few weeks before we see recent increases grow into a broader surge. thesicktimes.org/2026/06/30/n...
Graphic from The Sick Times sharing the latest COVID-19 trends for June 30, 2026. The graphic presents trends for three metrics: WastewaterSCAN category for SARS-CoV-2, which is "low" (represented with a light yellow color) and slightly increasing (represented with a diagonal up arrow); CDC wastewater viral activity level for SARS-Cov-2, which is "very low*" (light yellow) and stable (side to side arrow); and CDC COVID-19 test positivity, which is low (light yellow) and stable. Text below these metrics reads: "*CDC wastewater viral activity levels are calculated based on measurements in the last two years only. They do not account for the lower spread that could be possible with more widespread precautions." Chart from the People's CDC displaying data from the CDC's wastewater surveillance system. The chart is a map of the U.S. with states color-coded according to their recent wastewater viral activity levels for SARS-CoV-2, using data from the week of June 14 to June 20, 2026. Almost all states are colored in bright green for "very low" levels. Texas, Florida, and Alaska are colored in a lighter green for "low." Mississippi is colored in yellow for "moderate," and Guam is colored in red for "very high." Text above the map reads, "'Very Low,' 'Low,' and 'Moderate' levels -- except for Guam." The People's CDC's logo is in the top right corner.

Wastewater data from the CDC and WastewaterSCAN report very low national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage and low levels across most regions.
The South is an exception to this trend: WWSCAN reports recent increases and higher SARS-CoV-2 levels in some Southern testing sites, particularly in Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. And the CDC reports “low” and "moderate" levels in some Southern states compared to "very low" almost everywhere else.In addition, the CDC’s infectious disease forecasting center estimates that cases are “growing” in Louisiana and “likely growing” in Mississippi and Florida as of June 23.
Meanwhile, the center estimates that cases are “declining or likely declining” in 34 states as of June 23. It’s worth emphasizing that, while the outbreaks in the South merit concern, disease levels are still low across most of the U.S. compared to the last several years of available data.In other public health news: a recent Ebola outbreak in Africa is growing at a concerning rate. Health officials have confirmed over 1,000 cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the highest number recorded in the first month of an outbreak on this continent. The outbreak is posing many challenges for responders, including a lack of vaccines and treatments for the strain causing cases, violent conflict in the region, and health misinformation.

It’s Wastewater Wednesday! How are COVID levels? We’re using two sources to help us keep track of the country and our state of Oregon. Thank you to @michael-hoerger.bsky.social for the map and graph, and OHA for continuing to track data coming from our wastewater treatment centers!
Two screenshots against a photo of flowers running through grass. The first is a map of the US showing COVID transmission, with states colored light blue to berry pink depending on severity. Oregon is a mix of counties in light blue which means very low severity and light green which means low and a few counties in the moderate to high range. Lane County is in the Low range. Lake, Josephine, & Wasco are in the Moderate range. Klamath county is in the High range, according to the most recent data. Text warns that this data was last updated on June 29. The second screenshot is text that reads, “69% of Oregon community wastewater treatment centers were positive for SARS-CoV-2 on the most recent sample.”

Researchers traced it to a 2006 hospital video

And a 1994 quote from a pediatrician who said she learned it from daycare

Neither CDC nor WHO can tell you who invented it

A lull in transmission is often a time to seek delayed medical & dental care, not a time to rush to Applebee's. 🍎 Levels are at 1/5th the peak of the winter wave. Statistically, you'd be better off wearing a KN95 with mediocre fit during the peak than going maskless today.

I want to find new ways to say this because people look baffled when I try to explain it—but I really can’t put it any better. Covid is not over. Covid isn’t in the past tense. Right now is relatively good in very recent terms, but actually worse than what people retrospectively call “during covid.”

SARS2 has the following proven characteristics: it is persistent in the body (multi-systemic) after the acute phase of infection. “Recovery” therefore signals latency. That means the virus is still there but successfully suppressed by the immune system. For now. 9.

There are no drug cocktails to lower viral load when latency fails. Most don’t experience any latency and develop a myriad chronic conditions requiring medical intervention and prescriptions to try to prop up the progressively more damaged living system. 10.

If you’ve had Covid and “recovered” there’s even more urgency attached to not getting another strain. Seeding the body with more SARS2 will hasten deterioration and likely cut short the latency period you were experiencing. 11.

"Long COVID potentially affects nearly 6 million children in the US." 10–20% of children who contract COVID develop long COVID, which manifests differently than in adults. While vaccines lower risk, no single cure exists. Care is tailored to symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and brain fog.
The image shows a news article from The Boston Globe titled, "Long COVID potentially affects nearly 6 million children in the US. This South Shore teen is one of them."
Below the headline, a sub-headline explains that long COVID is diagnosed by a pattern of unexplained symptoms rather than a single test. The article is written by Aayushi Datta and was updated on April 23, 2026.
The main visual is a photograph of a teenage girl, Kaylee Joaquim, standing on a wooden staircase in a dimly lit home. She is leaning against the banister, looking directly at the camera. The caption notes that she has difficulty with stairs because of long COVID.

Wastewater data report the lowest national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage in a couple of years, and low levels across regions. Recent levels are still higher than the true lows we saw with widespread precautions earlier in the pandemic, but they are getting surprisingly close. bit.ly/48byxo8
Graphic from The Sick Times sharing the latest COVID-19 trends for April 21, 2026. The graphic presents trends for three metrics: WastewaterSCAN category for SARS-CoV-2, which is “medium” (represented with a dark yellow color) and slightly decreasing (represented with a diagonal down arrow); CDC wastewater viral activity level for SARS-Cov-2, which is “very low*” (lighter yellow) and slightly decreasing; and CDC COVID-19 test positivity, which is low (lighter yellow) and slightly decreasing. Text below these metrics reads: “*CDC wastewater viral activity levels are calculated based on measurements in the last two years only. They do not account for the lower spread that could be possible with more widespread precautions.”Wastewater data from the CDC, WastewaterSCAN, and Biobot Analytics all report the lowest national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage in a couple of years, and low levels across regions. For WWSCAN, which has the most reliable long-term data, this is the lowest national average since spring 2022. Recent levels are still higher than the true lows we saw with widespread precautions earlier in the pandemic, but they are getting surprisingly close.BA.3.2 (“Cicada”) remains a damper on this good news. The variant continues to grow globally, and children continue to be overrepresented in publicly-shared sequences, suggesting that they could be more susceptible. But it’s not a huge presence in U.S. data yet — in part because the CDC’s variant pages are now only updated once a month.
JAMA’s medical news vertical published a helpful explainer about Cicada this week, reinforcing that experts are concerned about the variant but having a hard time following it.Meanwhile, there are other causes for illness going around right now, even as we have passed the end of flu season. CDC testing data, as well as wastewater data from WWSCAN and Biobot, warn of higher levels of the respiratory pathogens human metapneumovirus (HMPV), rhinovirus, enterovirus and the gastrointestinal pathogens norovirus and rotavirus.
