Meta promised no political ads on their platforms 🛑 But political ads are still very present. @favstats.eu shows this for the Netherlands. And now several politicians were found advertising ahead of 🇩🇰 elections 🗳️ @madshovethy.bsky.social explains why this is problematic. www.dr.dk/nyheder/poli...

Converting a fully finished paper from LaTeX to Word is probably the most painful thing I have ever had to do. Is there really not any reeeeeeelatively easy way of doing it?

See you in Denver at #ICA25! I’m so happy to finally talk about this large cross-national collaboration we did last year! I was fortunate to assemble a team of extraordinary people to study the role of ad delivery algorithms in political campaigns by collaborating with 30+ parties across the EU.

A majority of Danes are in favor of the content moderation policy, which Meta now wants to remove. But there are also areas where most Danes believe that people can decide for themselves, e.g. whether women can share pictures of themselves topless on the beach. See a sample from our report below:

Meta drops content moderation which users want! ⛔ New data show that users (n=2000 Danes) both disagree with some of the announced changes (like referring to religious groups as stupid) *and* dislike some policies being kept. We need voices from users on this. And especially from non-US users.

Two salient facts about Facebook replacing its fact-checking program with community notes: (1) community notes are cheaper. (2) the incoming political regime dislikes fact-checking. So community notes are less trouble. The rest is just framing. Zuck's sole principle is to do what's best for Zuck.

Two things can be true: 1. AI is going to be an increasingly important part of work 2. Saying people need to be able to use AI well in its current form is like the silly obsession with making sure people had Windows PC skills when I was in college www.phillyvoice.com/college-stud...

Yesterday, I discussed ad targeting on SoMe with my older brother, with him arguing that SoMe know more about you than you do yourself, Cambridge Analytica won the election for Trump, etc.. At some point, I asked him if he know what my PhD is about. He did not. Oh, how Christmas is wonderful.🙃

What counts as an election win? Anglo media frame Wilders' plurality in 🇳🇱 as an "election victory", but multiparty systems are tricky. Take 🇩🇰 in 2015: the plurality winner lost government control, and the biggest loser by vote share formed a single party government instead 🙃

Three out of the four biggest winners barely spent any money on (targeted) Meta and Google ads. The 4th one (GL-PvdA) spent the most by far. This should caution us to not overestimate the effects of online political microtargeting. You can't just spend your way to victory by spending on targeting.
