even if Meta glasses are useful as a disability tool that in no way justifies their existence as a surveillance device manufactured by one of the worst companies on earth? this is not how we make the world more accessible sorry

It’s a big shopping holiday, but mostly for summer and outdoors stuff. Great time to get a new lawnmower or patio furniture. I wouldn’t necessarily expect dev courses to be on sale, but if you’re doing a sale around that time anyway…

Last week I talked a little but about building a design system with Claude Code. I wrote up a full post detailing the steps I took and what I learned. Check it out: www.maxtaylor.design/writing/what...

Every time I see someone talk about Claude I think about how they switched from female to male names as soon as they wanted the robots to seem like experts vs personal assistants.

Happy May Day. This week’s newsletter is about smoking, which is a very stupid thing a lot of us used to do, as well as very stupid things we are currently doing, which we will someday look down on as well. buttondown.com/monteiro/arc...

How to smoke
I used to love to smoke. If it weren’t for the whole lung cancer, emphysema, death thing, would you recommend smoking?

Happy May Day! Thank you to the labor leaders in Oregon and across the country who work to bring us closer to social and economic justice and to all workers who contribute to our communities, from putting food on our tables to delivering critical health care.

It actually handled spacing pretty well. I tweaked it a bit on the button padding, but otherwise I haven’t noticed issues yet. The semantic naming for colors was a bit of a mess, but I suspect that’s the case even when humans do it - it’s complex lol

The Figma MCP/Figma variables was definitely the weakest. The ones using the coded components were more interactive by default. With just a simple test design either was perfectly fine. If the design were more specific I think using the react components + Figma MCP is the way to go.

Day 100 of #100DaysOfCode 🎉🎉 Today I did some testing with the design system + Claude by coding the same site 3 ways: using a Figma design + MCP, using just a prompt and code components (no Figma), and combining both - using the react components but referencing the Figma design

Day 99- used the Figma Console MCP to import the design system into Figma. It set up all my variables and created the components. Definitely some things that need to be tweaked, but on the whole it did a pretty good job and automates a lot of the busywork (esp setting up variables) #100DaysOfCode

Days 97&98: continued working on building out a basic design system using Claude. It did a pretty good job of putting together the semantic tokens and building the components using Radix. I went back and revised some of the tokens and naming. #100DaysOfCode

Day 93: today I worked on creating a design system using Claude code. I was able to get quite far - primitive, semantic, and component tokens set up in json and Figma, and a handful of react components coded and hooked up in storybook. Not bad for a day’s work. #100DaysOfCode

Claude: I’ve found the problem! It seems like maybe the library isn’t importing properly! Me: you don’t say 🙄

Me: yeah, I was going to do that after I figured out the library issue, but thanks for screwing it up for me. Now can you help me figure out the problem I actually asked you to solve? Claude: does it work if you don’t try to use the library? Me: yeah… Claude: does it work if you do use it? Me: no

this is fucking unreal stuff from Noah Wyle on the magic of The Pitt. www.gq.com/story/noah-w...
“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

Mine was like, “oh, you have custom properties in your CSS and design tokens in Figma file? Ok, cool, I’ll just hard code your font sizes and colors in 73 different places.”

Max Taylor @madebymax.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
I mean my prompt was basically “use the figma MCP and use the designs, components, and tokens in this file” and I foolishly thought it might actually use the designs, components, and tokens in my file 🤷

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.
