Pretty stark that 90% of those responding to the Timms Review’s Call for Evidence said they had a negative experience claiming PIP. It’s not surprising, though - the current process is difficult, long and complex, and too many people are incorrectly rejected - like Jake:
Jake (not his real name) applied for PIP to help cover extra health costs after a stroke left him disabled. However, his application was refused following the initial assessment. The reasons given for the rejection were that Jake could lift weights and that he had not sought mental health support. At the time, Jake was attending the gym for neuro-rehabilitation because he had no muscle control in his arm. He was also on an NHS waiting list for mental health support.

Since his initial application, he has been waiting around a year and a half for a tribunal. During this time, Jake’s mother has had to spend a significant amount of money adapting their home and car so that he can live as safely as possible. Without financial support, the strain on the family has increased, both practically and financially. Jake is now expected to attend a tribunal, which he finds very distressing, as he finds it extremely upsetting to talk about his stroke. The process is taking a toll on his mental health.
