You know, saying that man are hardwired to hunt specifically giraffes does suggest he agrees that the origin of human society and culture is Africa, but somehow I don’t think he thought that stupid statement through.

He is notoriously the man who announced the cod moratorium in Bay Bulls in 1992, yelling “I didn’t take the fish from the goddam water!” when the fishers present started getting angry.

The archive where I do a lot of work got an offer from them to digitize some of their collection and I was never more proud when the head archivist was like hell no. Of course, we did the work and now they link to it so they got to eat cake anyway.

Maryland has a too medieval to care flag for sure.
000
Meaghan Walker @madbirds.nl · 18/09/2026
Send this to New Brunswick, whose flag also has a boat and lions and yet is awful. A flag should either be so simple a child can draw it or so medieval that its to cool to matter.

Also, look at their rad flag:
Saint-Pierre et Miquelon flag that is four panels. Three-quarters of the right is a blue field with a golden three-masted caravel; the remaining three panels are thirds of the remaining leftward quarter. Top is a white cross and a green X on a field of red; middle is a white field of black crosses (?), and bottom are two lions passant on a field of red.

A fitting choice since, due to timezone shenanigans, Newfoundland is a half hour ahead of the mainland and Saint-Pierre is a half hour ahead of Newfoundland, so though Newfoundland is closer to Europe in kilometres, Saint-Pierre is closer to Europe in time.

Look at the lapels. Insanity. That Canada could be so lucky.
Newfoundland and Labrador's first premier, Joey Smallwood sitting for a photo portrait in a double-breasted suit with huge notched labels, a white shirt, no waistcoat, and a polka-dot bow-tie. This portrait is missing his iconic black thick-rimmed glasses; instead he has round wire-frames on. He sits casually in a wooden chair, his arm draped over the back of it. A damask curtain hangs behind him.

Nice try but you're gonna have to do better than a pinstripe suit and a watch chain to beat Joey Smallwood at the style game buddy.

Privatization wasn’t on the ballot when Canadians voted for Mark Carney. Really foul the way he’s using the blind trust so many continue to have in him to make massive, fundamental changes to Canada (hurting normal Canadians) so big companies can profit. Please pay attention.

There’s an informal Maritimes to Prairies courier service in Canada where people buy lobster in the airport and fly them out west as carry on. Peas work better than ice for keeping food cold bc it doesn’t thaw as fast or melt into water.

I do love Persuasion for all the navy stuff. My fav joke is when Austen has the officers perform a little in-group preening about how anyone whose been to the Caribbean would never include Bermuda as part of the West Indies.

Newspaper article that declares THOSE OLD EXPRESSIONS DIE HARD: The solemnity of the courtroom was shattered when a witness took the stand here Thursday. The defence witness brought down the house when, in replying affirmatively to questions by Magistrate Hugh O'Neill, he said: "That's right, me old trout." After court officials regained their composure they had to warn the witness several times on how to address his honor properly. But old Newfoundland expressions die hard. The witness managed to remember the correct form of address for a while. But in his final reply it was: "That's right, your honor, me old trout."
