Also, look at their rad flag:
Saint-Pierre et Miquelon flag that is four panels. Three-quarters of the right is a blue field with a golden three-masted caravel; the remaining three panels are thirds of the remaining leftward quarter. Top is a white cross and a green X on a field of red; middle is a white field of black crosses (?), and bottom are two lions passant on a field of red.

Look at the lapels. Insanity. That Canada could be so lucky.
Newfoundland and Labrador's first premier, Joey Smallwood sitting for a photo portrait in a double-breasted suit with huge notched labels, a white shirt, no waistcoat, and a polka-dot bow-tie. This portrait is missing his iconic black thick-rimmed glasses; instead he has round wire-frames on. He sits casually in a wooden chair, his arm draped over the back of it. A damask curtain hangs behind him.

Newspaper article that declares THOSE OLD EXPRESSIONS DIE HARD: The solemnity of the courtroom was shattered when a witness took the stand here Thursday. The defence witness brought down the house when, in replying affirmatively to questions by Magistrate Hugh O'Neill, he said: "That's right, me old trout." After court officials regained their composure they had to warn the witness several times on how to address his honor properly. But old Newfoundland expressions die hard. The witness managed to remember the correct form of address for a while. But in his final reply it was: "That's right, your honor, me old trout."

Yes, that is Joey Smallwood in a tux and sunglasses, walking towards a saluting US navy officer between two rows of saluting US navy sailors. The room at the former navy base at Argentia, Nfld, probably a gym.

NYT Opinion | Is it time for a new sexual revolution?
Life cycle of the jelly fish moving clockwise from a fertilized egg to a larva to a polyp that is a wineglass shape with tentacles anchored to a rock or wharf, polyp transforming, growing essentially what will bloom into the jellyfish domes, to young medusa as the jellyfish bloom from the polyp (asexual reproduction I think) to the adult medusa as we commonly see them, labeled with jelly-like mesoglea (the dome), mouth, reproductive organ, feeding arm, and stinging tentacles. The adult produces the sexual gametes, resuming the cycle at fertilized egg.

I drove by the most Sims 2 ass McMansion today outside town. Child-me would have been embarrassed by such a roof.
A mcmansion 2 story house with consecutive pyramids for the roof. The house looks like one building that has started to sprout new additional segments, with a giant entrance. To the side is a motel 8 parkade which either is or protects the garage. The person who lives her will have a view of the pond, but no one else will. Every tree has been cut, every square meter of sod stripped. The sky is grey. The house is grey. The gravel is grey. Map view showing the strange shape that is the roof. It is like a mistake that has cascaded its way across the top of this building. A metaphorical smear on our proud local vernacular architecture.

Always struck by the language, both the rote explanation of following the legal procedure of heaving to and sending a boat and how the captain adds details when that couldn’t happen. “… it was impossible for a boat to live in such a sea …”
Drowning
Royal Charter 66700 Yarmouth NS from Pensacola WA Cain, Master

February 12th 1879 6.30PM 47.28N 32W James P. Holden fell from the main topsail yard while furling the sail in a heavy squall and was drowned it was blowing a gale of wind at the time and a heavy sea running the ship going seven knotts an hour it was impossible for a boat to live in such a sea and was blowing too heavy to bring the ship to the wind until sail was reduced on her and it was then blowing so hard we could not get the topsailsfurled until they were both fore and main in ribbons, immediately he fell the braces were thrown to him.

We were never modern.
The Sailor and Banker or The Firm in Danger! published in 1799. Shows a sailor in blue jacket and buff trousers handing a note to a banker in older men's fashion of a long red coat, yellow waistcoat, and buff breeches. Watch fops hang from both sailor's pockets, indicating that he has two pocket watches. This was visual shorthand in caricature to show that sailors were careless with money since there is no point in wearing more than one watch--it was only a display of wealth.

OMG, it is not counterintutitive: Doge is no more interesting in efficiency than AI is interested in intelligence ... it is a process meant to break public services so they can shift public dollars to private companies with no accountability!
Start of text (article linked in following post): "...like they wanted to get me from the moment I was walked to the American side." On 4 March, the White House issued a statement celebrating how "Ice arrests of illegal immigrants have surged 627%" during Trump's first month in office.
Jasmine Mooney, a Canadian woman who was detained by Ice for two weeks, says while the private companies who own the facilities are run for profit, there's no incentive to get people out quickly. (Highlighted Text) But in the era of Elon Musk's department of government efficiency (Doge), it seems counterintuitive for public money to be deliberately wasted on detaining illegal aliens with the will and means to return home. (End Highlighted Text)
Trump's border tsar, Tom Homan, promised "shock and awe" from day one of his administration. Perhaps Becky's incarceration was political theatre - or preformative cruelty. Whatever the reason, in Trump's America, a tourist who makes a mistake can be locked up, seemingly indefinitely.
The deportation paper Becky signed bans her from the US for the next 10 years. (End of image)

From the Rio Grande to the Colorado, there go our great container ships! How do they get between the two? Simple.
A train with a boat as cargo. This was a real idea in the late 19th century to cross the isthmus between the Bay of Fundy and the Northumberland Strait but was never economical.

You’ve heard of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, now AI is bringing us Lgugar’s Flying Male Genitals.
A pixelated crop of the cover if UCLA’s AI generated textbook for the entirely AI based class on comparative English literature. Between a nonsense orange and red flag and a romanesque building is a strange flying object. At a glance it looks like a bent dick and two brown balls with a pair of grey wings. A person is apparently riding the flying genitals, sitting astride the shaft. While this is in keeping with frank and often comical medieval depictions of the male sexual apparatus, it is more likely AI’s poor rendering of a goose or some other kind of bird.
