All Protocol Observed Welcome to Issue 249 of The Continent São Tomé and Príncipe was ground zero for the transatlantic slave-plantation model. How do you memorialise that? bit.ly/249_TC
The cover of The Continent, Issue 249, dated 15 August 2026.

At the very top is a bright yellow horizontal strip with the text: “AFRICAN JOURNALISM | 15 AUGUST 2026 | ISSUE 249” in black.

Below it, against a pale cream background, the publication’s name, “The Continent”, appears in very large, bold black lettering.

The main headline reads “São Tomé and Príncipe: The difficult work of preserving colonial heritage”, set in large black type on the upper left.

The lower two-thirds of the cover is dominated by a photograph of an old, weathered colonial-era building. It is a large, grey stone or concrete structure with an ornate, symmetrical façade. A broad staircase rises to a central entrance, flanked by curved balustrades. The upper level has a rounded balcony supported by several slender columns, with arched openings behind it. The building appears badly weathered, with dark staining and crumbling surfaces.

There is green grass and tropical vegetation, including banana plants, around the building. A narrow dirt path leads from the foreground towards the staircase.

The photograph is credited to Inês Gonçalves in small white text at the bottom right.A poster with a warm cream background features the words "Reading is resistance." in large, bold black lettering at the top.

Below the text is a colourful illustration of a person lying on their stomach reading a newspaper. Their elbows rest on the pages while their head is propped up in their hands. They wear a pink shirt and a cap, with a pair of shoes on their raised feet behind them.

The reader is sheltered beneath a roof made from the open pages of a giant book. The book is supported by two oversized upright books on either side, creating the shape of a small house or tent. The books are illustrated in soft blues, purples, greens and yellow, giving the image a warm, inviting feel.

At the bottom, the poster invites people to subscribe to The Continent for free by messaging a South African phone number on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram, or by emailing read@thecontinent.org. The Continent appears in bold black type at the very bottom.

Nazis no parlamento
Para o historiador Richard Evans, o fim da República de Weimar não começou quando Hitler subiu ao poder, mas sim em 1930, quando os 107 deputados nazis eram a oposição no Reichstag.

'The Wilberforce Institute at the University of Hull published the findings from its research focusing on records from 1764 to 1834.' Unhelpfully, neither the @theguardian.com article nor the Lloyd's Register website at present offers a link to the report. So much for open access and open research.
