#OTD 3/10/1914 #RememberRCN -1st troop convoy of #WWI departs Quebec City with the 1st Canadian Expeditionary Force, 31 ships escorted by RN. Consisting of; -30K soldiers -7.6K horses -70 guns -110 motor & 705 horsed vehicles CGS Canada, Fisheries protection cruiser was part of the escort.

#OTD 2/10/1952 #RememberRCN -HMCS IROQUOIS engaged Chinese shore batteries off Korea & is struck by shell aft of “B” Gun, killing 3 sailors & wounding 11. IROQUIOUS broke off to tend wounded & repair damage, returning the next day, destroying the enemy guns. Photo -For Posterity's Sake

#OTD 2/10/1939 #RememberRCN -The Canadian Survey Ship Acadia recommissioned in RCN as HMCS ACADIA. This historic Canadian hydrographic ship 1st entered naval service during First World War & is now a museum ship at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax. #OTD 1/10/1941 #RememberRCN -Appropriately named, Sail Training schooner HMCS ATTABOY is commissioned into the RCN. The owner, Lt. Thomas Fuller, RCNVR (AKA -The Pirate of the Adriatic for his exploits commanding MGB's) of Ottawa loaned the 38 ft schooner to train RCNVR sailors.

#OTD 29/9/1952 #RememberRCN -Cdr Landymore, RCN as SO Task Unit 95.22 orders 4 USN destroyers to bombard a North Korean gun emplaced in a cave on a cliff, without success. He then moves HMCS IROQUOIS close inshore & with a single broadside, destroys the deeply embedded gun.

#OTD 28/9/1944 #RememberRCN -HMCS BOWMANVILLE commissioned and is the last of 12 Castle Class corvettes to enter service with the RCN. Built as Royal Navy NUNNEY CASTLE, transferred to Canada before completed.

#OTD 27/9/1954 #RememberRCN -HMCS LABRADOR arrives in Esquimalt & is the 1st RCN ship & 1st warship to transit the Canadian Northwest Passage from Atlantic to Pacific Oceans. Photo -LABRADOR with the RCMP Vessel St. Roch at Esquimalt. St. Roch was the 1st ship to transit Northwest Passage.

#OTD 25/9/1950 #RememberRCN -HMCS ATHABASKAN sends 30 heavily armed sailors in two boats to Korean island of Piun-to. On landing, they found the North Korean soldiers had retreated the day before. The sailors made arrangements for rice and flour for the embattled islanders.

#OTD 25/9/1940 #RememberRCN -HMCS Prince Robert intercepts and captures German passenger freighter Weser off Mexico. Taken as a prize by @RoyalCanNavy & is renamed MS Vancouver Island, entering service with the Canadian Government Merchant Marine.

#OTD 24/9/1997 #RememberRCN -Vice-Admiral Gregory R. Maddison became the 28th person to command Canada`s Navy as Commander Maritime Command and Chief of the Maritime Staff (CMS), replacing VAdm Gary Garnett who had been appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff.

#OTD 24/9/1943 #RememberRCN -U536 enters Baie des Chaleurs waiting off Pointe de Maisonette for UBoat POW’s from Camp 30 in Bowmanville. RCMP foiled escape & RCN laid a trap to capture/sink sub. U536 escaped by hugging the coast on 28 Sept after getting caught in a fishing net.

#OTD 24/9/1942 -U517 survives two attacks from 113 Sqn RCAF Hudson off Sept Îles in the St. Lawrence. 1st U-boat crashed dived as bombs dropped, 3 hrs later crash dived again as 4 bombs on target ahead of conning tower, a dud was later dislodged from U-boats deck.

#OTD 24/9/1940 #RememberRCN -Under the British/American Destroyers for Bases agreement, six USN destroyers are transferred to Canada as Town class destroyers. HMCShips ANNAPOLIS, COLUMBIA, NIAGARA, ST CLAIR, ST CROIX & ST FRANCIS are commissioned into the RCN at Halifax.

#OTD 23/9/1965 #RememberRCN -HMCSubmarine OJIBWA, “O” class submarine, commissions into the RCN at Chatham, UK. She is the first of three “O” class subs built for the RCN. A forth would be acquired as a dockside training vessel. OJIBWA is now a museum ship at Port Burwell, ON.

#OTD 21/9/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS GEORGIAN while escorting Sydney-Quebec Convoy SQ-38, spots periscope/partial conning tower near Cap des Rosiers & attempts to ram U-boat as it dived. GEORGIAN dropped DC's. Damaged, U-517 broke surface, rolled on its side & was able to escape.

20/9/1943 #RememberRCN -Ships for Canada ceremony broadcast live on CBC, signals Canadian Shipyards to launch a record 12 ships simultaneously. Including a destroyer, 2 frigates, corvette, minesweeper, 3 tugs, a Fairmille, tanker & 2 freighters, worth $10.5M in shipping. @CDNShipbuilders

#OTD 20/9/1943 #RememberRCN -HMCS ST. CROIX torpedoed & sunk by acoustic torpedo from U-305, while escorting convoy ON-202. HMS ITCHEN rescues 5 officers & 76 men. Tragically, all but one survivor was killed when ITCHEN was torpedoed two days later. SEE zurl.co/YxRDp

#OTD 19/9/1941 #RememberRCN -HMCS LEVIS torpedoed by U74 off Greenland while escorting convoy SC44. She later sinks while under tow. LEVIS is the first RCN corvette lost during the Battle of Atlantic, eighteen of her ship's company were killed. SEE zurl.co/emhx7

#OTD 16/9/1954 #RememberRCN -HMCS RESOLUTE, Bay class minesweeper commissioned & is the 1st @RoyalCanNavy ship to be equipped with a Television. TV set donated by City of Kingston where the minesweeper was built. @CBC opened its 1st TV station (CBHT) in Halifax on 20 Dec 1954.

#OTD 16/9/1942 #RememberRCN - First female Doctor. Dr Marion Isabel Templin appointed Surgeon Lieutenant, initially in the WRCNS, transferred to the RCN a month later. By the end of the war, seven female physicians will have joined the RCN’s Medical Branch.

#OTD 16/9/1942 #RememberRCN - Convoy SQ-36 comes under attack by U-165 west of Cap Chat. U-boat sinks SS Joannis (Greek) and damages SS Essex Lance (British) and SS Pan York (American). There were no deaths amongst the three merchant ships.

#OTD 16/9/1939 #RememberRCN -First convoy of WWII leaves Halifax for the UK, escorted by HMCShips SAGUENAY & ST. LAURENT. HX-1 consists of 18 merchant ships & arrived Liverpool on 30 September. By the end of WWII, over 25K merchants ships would be escorted across the Atlantic.

#OTD 15/9/1977 #RememberRCN -Vice-Admiral Robert Hillborn Falls is appointed as Chief of Defence Staff, commanding the CAF in Ottawa. Promoted to Admiral, Falls is the first Royal Canadian Navy sailor CDS & the 3rd person to hold the rank of Admiral in history of Canada's Navy.
