Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now. This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

Notes App screenshot of text that reads: Imagine a person who’s been raped or sexually assaulted, and the vast majority of other people they’ve met have been raped or sexually assaulted or are 1 degree of separation away from someone who has been, and this has been the case your entire life, and yet every time you try to talk about it, you have to agonize over the exact choice of words and specificity you use, or else someone might take it personally and feel bad about themselves.

While all you’re trying to do is relate how bad it felt when someone drugged and raped you, or jerked off at you on a bus, or flashed their dick at you while you were stocking shelves, or a drunk would hang around the fast food place behind your highschool and stare at 16y/o’s chests and the same creep had the audacity to make a comment about it in front of your mom one day, or your older sister’s boyfriend molested you and you dropped your glasses so you walked 30minutes at night without them to a friends house to get away, or you had to help a 19 y/o girl hide in a locked office at your job because an also 19y/o boyfriend had been stalking her for days, followed her to a bank and is refusing to leave while calling her for the 50th time that hour, and all of these examples only describe about 4 people in your life and some of them happened multiple times to one person.

Anyway, we’re sorry for hurting YOUR feelings by not relating our lived experiences with precisely worded clinical detachment.

So, here it is - with apologies to my former editor for getting this out way too late - one neat trick that proves the Civil War was not about states' rights:
If the Civil War had been about upholding states' rights, then slave states would have been fine with non-slave states passing laws protecting Black residents who had self-emancipated ("run away") from slave states. Slave states weren't fine with that.
They pushed a federal law - the Fugitive Slave Act - that superseded states' rights, forcing federal marshals to arrest and transport these people, regardless of the laws of the state they were in.
Bloop! That's it!
In the lead-up the Civil War, this was a common point made by antislavery activists
- a ubiquitous thing we have somehow forgotten, like sewing our own clothes or shape-note singing.

I think the lesson of this is that women do not want to have casual sex with men they don't know well.
They'll end up hating themselves, being hated by other women, and even seen with contempt by the men involved. This is why these situations turn bad.
Maybe she was assaulted, maybe not, either way it was a terrible decision to make.

From, of all things, an old/archived *Cornell University* page on the topic, and uh BOY IS THIS A RICH TEXT:
archived 2014 Cornell University website page from the Office of the Dean of Students:
"HomeGreek LifeAbout Our OfficeThe Power of 2%
The Power of 2%
From an article in the New York Times:

Since the founding of the American College Fraternity movement in 1776, fraternities have grown to symbolize leadership, independence, scholastic achievement and service to their various campuses and communities. Fraternity men represent a very small percentage, only 2% of the male population in the United States. However, that 2% is a very powerful group of individuals. Fraternity men have gone on to hold many of the top positions in our nation, from the business world to the political arena.

Approximately 80% of the top executives of Fortune 500 companies are fraternity men. 76% of current United States Senators and Congressmen are fraternity men. 100 of 158 cabinet members since 1900 have been fraternity men. 40 of 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910 have been fraternity men All but two United States Presidents since 1825 have been fraternity men.

It is certainly no surprise that today's college and university students express a keen interest in the Greek system. The opportunities are endless and the benefits speak for themselves. Each year thousands of young men enter the working world with the competitive advantage of fraternity experience and alumni contacts."
