It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Here's a funny thing about the right to vote: it wasn't won by voting.
Two suffragists in period dress, ceremonially putting ballots into a ballot box. The background has been replaced with an elaborate collage of 19th C printing-press parts. The ballots are glowing with radiant spikes. The face of the ballot box has been replaced with an Nvidia Vera Lynn GPU.

I’ve loved it since childhood. Found the steps and climbed to the top three and a half years ago — astounded to find the house at the bottom almost unchanged since 1932.
Steps from Laurel & Hardy‘s 1932 short The Music Box, viewed from the top looking down, now surrounded by buildings and vegetation.

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

Rome wasn't overthrown in a day. Oligarchies are stubborn, and by the time they've established and entrenched themselves, they have resources, power blocs and even mercenaries they can deploy to repel would-be dethroners.
A woodcut engraving of a courtroom scene in which the divorcee has thrown herself into the arms of one of the lawyers and they are about to kiss. The judge's bench sports a pixelated, 1998-era 'I'm feeling lucky' Google button.

Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.
