Smart piece. These governor races aren’t as sexy as the Senate contests but deserve attention and staffers would tell ya more money.

Republicans don't actually want Milwaukee to succeed. They want to deprive it of resources, deprive it of funding, and then point their fingers and blame the city for the challenges they've chiefly caused. They don't want a thriving city. They want a political punching bag.

If the future of democracy depends on shared truth, and if shame is the right response to bad faith, what is the future of democracy when men like Eric Schmitt not only shrug off humiliation but are even rewarded for it? For an answer, I got in touch with @donmoyn.bsky.social.

If executive branch creates a system so that people under government control can be located and then just stops listing some people in that system — despite their still being under government control — that should be a five-alarm fire for the other branches, the states, and the public.

NEW: The GOP has controlled the state legislature for the last 16 years. But with gerrymandered maps now dead and buried, Democrats have a real chance at winning a majority. It's far from a given (the Assembly will be tough), but an opportunity awaits. www.therecombobulationarea.com/p/wisconsins...

After 16 years of GOP control, Democrats have a shot at winning a majority in the Wisconsin State Legislature. This would be a monumental shift, but it’s far from a given — especially in the Assembly.

The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...
Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]

one common thread (among the horrifying many) between the numerous ICE shootings/murders is that no first aid was administered to the victim. armed combatants of the government shot to kill, and if they didn’t kill right away, they gave time for it to happen anyway. it is absolutely grotesque.

National security decision-making has a longer time horizon. It would be stupid for Canada, Europe, South Korea, etc. to act now based on assuming the US will be a reliable in a decade. We have shown that we are not. Many Americans still don’t appreciate how profound of a change that is.

Dear Democrats, You will never be able to triangulate your way through racism/sexism/transphobia, because pushing a lighter, politer form of bigotry is always a lose-lose proposition. The bigots want the uncut stuff, while normal people aren't drawn to cowards who sell out. Stand your ground.

This is large scale disenfranchisement and now SCOTUS has even less excuse not to reject Trump's EO on mail voting. Allowing him to move forward would have clear negative harms to voters that could not be reversed, even as his claim for authority over voting processes is legally dubious.

I think part of the pundit crack-up has been that they missed the big call of their lifetimes about which was the bigger threat to America: wokeness or authoritarianism. And rather than admitting that, they are doubling down on wokeness, while ignoring an authoritarianism that does not threaten them
