Whit Monday at Bampton and a rare chance to hear Jinky Wells’ fiddle being played for a dance. Wells is the recorded source for the Bampton dance tunes. It was given back to the village last year and has been gently restored and will be on display in the village archive next to the library.

In 1823, Mary Anning discovered the first nearly complete Plesiosaurus skeleton. It was so strange looking that scientists initially thought it was a fake! Her "sea dragon" provided crucial physical evidence supporting the concept of extinction. #WomenInSTEM
A museum exhibit photograph showing the iconic mounted skeleton of a Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus fossil discovered by Mary Anning in 1823 near Lyme Regis, England—one of her most famous finds that helped prove the existence of extinct marine reptiles. The nearly complete, dark fossilized skeleton is displayed horizontally in a large glass-fronted case with a gray background wall, mounted in a naturalistic swimming pose with the long neck extended forward, flippers spread, and tail slightly curved. The skeleton features a small skull with sharp teeth, a very elongated neck (characteristic of plesiosaurs), a barrel-shaped torso with ribs, four large paddle-like flippers, and a short tail. A small informational plaque with a portrait of Mary Anning and text is placed below the neck, and a label identifies the specimen. The display is framed in dark wood with brass rails at the bottom, lit to highlight the bones against the neutral background. This fossil was pivotal in 19th-century science, challenging biblical timelines and contributing to the emerging field of paleontology—Mary Anning's discovery demonstrated that ancient seas were inhabited by creatures unlike any living animals.

"Lyme Regis, 2015". #poem #poetry #skypoets #blueskypoets #poetsofbluesky #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity #lymeregis
Neck curved, maternal,
              stretched around a nest
                            of sand and mud;
                            old stone and mortar, saurian
                                          and still.
The waves upon the seaward side,
                                     exaggerated ripples,
                                          burst upon the Cobb’s
                                                 protective, slanting nape,
                                                        and drench the walkers
                                                                 and their dogs.
                                                  Leeward, boats like painted eggs
                                                  lean every way, exposing
                                                  barnacles and slime.
Low tide’s the briefest moment of
                                                    protective calm before
                                          the little vessels fledge
                                             and fly away upon
                                                         the circling sea.

Lyme Regis (panoramic photo)
A panoramic photo of a sandy beach covered in footprints, tall cliffs in the far distance. A small collection of buildings hug the sand to the left and a large stone and concrete bay curves around on the right. The sun is shining bright and the sky is a deep blue, fading to white near the horizon, the sea is calm and as blue as the sky.

I've started up a starter pack loosely based around the UK folk and traditional music scene and will be adding to it all the time. If you can think of any artists, organisations or mandolin-whittling interest groups I've missed please let me know! go.bsky.app/D5A8kE4
