The City case should be a starting point for naming and understanding the ways in which football has been colonised by economic and political power and how we might resist them.

I think this will be one of the defining images of the Premier League's void years: a proudly working class fanbase celebrating that the ruling family of an oppressive regime had hired a barrister on £10,000-an-hour to try and prevent them suffering consequences for their cheating. Embarrassing.

The question at the back of mind since the announcement that MCFC was found guilty: what will Burnham's government do, given the UK's relationship with the UAE - and the way Manchester City Council unrolled the red carpet for Abu Dhabi United Group? It has no right to do anything, of course. But...

All this nauseating bleating from City fans,”don’t punish us”. How many Wembley finals did you have that should have gone to others? How many Champions League nights? You’ve cheated for years, everyone knew it and no one could say because you’d threaten to sue or make farcical accusations of racism.

We can now look forward to a long appeal process, I know. But we can also say, now, "Manchester City, who were found guilty of 114 charges..." every time we mention the club's name; and I believe we should. No more "allegations". They were found guilty, and that is a fact.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.
