Staggeringly good article, this. Sublime mix of intelligence and snark, and a structural device that's hilarious in and of itself.

Snickering schoolboy in me has just noticed the somewhat 'below the waist' names of several members of the current England cricket team. Right now we have Gay, Root, Cox and Tongue on the field.

On the eve of the start of the season, a prediction: Cheltenham Town will, at a minimum, make the League Two playoffs.

The last sentence here is the key point. I do not defend the mobs at all, but in many of the protests of recent years a specific and serious crime had either been committed (Southport, Southampton, Epping) or was plausibly alleged (Epsom).

Antonia Romeo is going to be a hugely under-priced factor in the success or failure of the incoming Burnham government. She's about 5 months into her tenure as Cab Sec, which has coincided with Starmer's long goodbye and the choreography of Burnham's return.

Rare twitching of optimism here, but based on the last week of signings, I can think of a lot worse bets than Cheltenham Town for the 26/27 League 2 title at 66/1 each way.

I think there is a basis for cautious optimism about the reports of progress on US-Iran peace talks, simply because it's being claimed by Rubio as well as by Trump. Rubio still has some relationship with the truth and some needs to retain some credibility for the 2028 election.

The World Cup is going to create a real headache here because that's one of the few occasions when plenty of non-racist mainstream people might fly the flag. The same colours will simultaneously mean "Come on, Bukayo Saka" and "Fuck off, brown people". The bigots and the normies will look very alike

Has the feeling that it will need one or two Cabinet level departures to truly force the issue. Jess Philips was news, but other three departures today have all been very low key. Will need at least one more 'name' or it will limp on ...

Fair to say this lived up to expectations. 0-0 on 90 minutes. Rochdale score in 5th minute of 6th added, 1-0. Crowd invade pitch, 7 minute delay before play restarts. About a minute and a half left. York equalise in final seconds, 1-1. They are promoted. Unbelievable finish.

It's happening! The mad, epic National League title race somehow gets the only finale it could ever have, and the one it deserves. After 45 of 46 games, York have 107 points, Rochdale have 105. Winner in the 9th minute of added time for Rochdale tonight. Final fixture: Rochdale v York, next Sat.

Trump's criticisms of the Pope are predictable arrogant and graceless but we shouldn't accept suggestions that any criticism of the Pope is ipso facto unacceptable.

Anyone searching for some sporting light relief from Current Events could do a lot worse than get stuck in to the National League title race, which is shaping up to be an all-time duel between Rochdale and York City.
League table showing Rochdale on 94 points, York on 92, having played 39 games each.

Very insightful point that explains that vague 'naked in the chamber' feeling. Also a prima facie argument for closer European security cooperation. Britain alone liable to be pushed around. Britain, France, German, Spain and Poland in lockstep ... bit less.

I could throw some waspish snobbery at a number of these places, but surely a core requirement here is to actually be a *city*. Blackpool, Ipswich, Swindon all fall at that hurdle. And what are "The Highlands" - the most not-a-city place anywhere in the UK - doing welded to the Inverness bid?

One observation on the Farage teenager racism story ... I am 15 years younger than him and was at secondary school in the early 1990s. I grew up in a very white area but never saw or heard any open racism to the small handful of non-white kids in the playground.

Hello, I am a civil servant in a film. I am also old, grey and dull, and while my secret vice is something much more mundane and furtive (alcohol?, porn?) it still leaves me open to blackmail. However, I also have a dependability and stoicism which benefits the main characters at unexpected moments.

One of the greatest owns in history

(Screenshot of book excerpt)

A member of parliament, Thomas Massey-Massey, was introducing a motion to change the name of Christmas to Christ-tide, on the grounds that mass is a Catholic festival, inappropriate to a Protestant country. He was interrupted by a member opposite who asked him how he would like to be called 'Thotide Tidey-Tidey'. The bill was forgotten in the uproar.
