No cheating. Post the last photo of the sky from your camera roll.
A colobus monkey clambering along the top of rope in the treetops. He has a black body, with a fringe of white fur that rings his back, and a majestic in tuft of white fur at the end of his tail. He looks like he’s maybe heading off to get lunch.

Why is there so much animus against .webp? The only reasons I can see are 1. you’re nicking images off websites and you don’t have tools to handle webp, and 2. Pixel art get smushed more by webp than jpeg.

I’ve always fancied turning my hand to font design. I think I’d be good at it. Perhaps in the same way that some men think they could successfully score a point against Serena Williams.

Kieron’s post has been rattling round my brain since yesterday, and it’s because I massively appreciate designers who actually think about how RNGs will behave. Unlike certain others who create special mechanics that have as much statistical effect as yelling at the dice.

A light blue diagram depicting the sea, with the water's surface at the top, and just below it is an outline of the Mary Rose, with the depth (12m, 40ft or 6.7 fathoms). There is a line showing the seabed, which takes a rapid dive into the vertical...

Just commited the worst bit of filth in some code codepen.io/n3dst4/pen/b... #css #filth
Two triangular shapes containing text. The left one, the triangle points downwards and the text wraps neatly inside it, tapering as it gets further down to fit in the shape. The right one, the triangle poinmts upwards, and text also fits neatly inside, but it starts and the bottom (the widest part). This is a notoriously hard problem for layout engines to solve. The actual text in the shapes is not super relevant, but here it is:

Left: "This is some text wrapped around two floated triangles. It naturally renders at the top, which is the how stuff renders in HTML. It gets narrower as we go down, but the wrapping algorithm works to keep it constrained to this triangular shape all the way to the end."

Right: "This is the same, but the triangular shape is pointing the other way. The question is, how did I get this text to render at the bottom of this triangle, i.e. starting at the widest point and going up?"

Just wasted a stupid amount of time trying to get Cursor to do an incredibly simple code change that I could have done (and eventually did do) in 30s with a regex-replace. I even tried the pay-per-second resoning model. I'm not even remotely worried about the need for human developers for a while.

One of my long-simmering little not-quite-a-theories is that the world has deformed so much to what CEOs and the investor class want that it's infiltrating our language in weird ways. Such as this. Who gives a fuck about your "brand portfolio." Why is this public-facing language now?

How I feel about initiative systems in TTRPGs is that they only exist to dictate an order for us to roll the dice at the table, because we can't have everyone rolling and shouting out numbers at the same time. Initiative isn't "real" in the game world.

I've been thinking about ##ttrpg combat systems, and how I hate them so very much. The music changes. A tense standoff turns to violence. Chaos breaks out. Blood death and bullets. And we represent this by massively slowing everying the fuck down and going into "turns".

My prediction for AI coding assistants is that they will drain the brains out of a generation of coders and then become enshittified to save money, leaving us with with either a huge skills shortfall OR a generation of devs who cost the same amount gross but half their salary goes to OpenAI.

Worst Guy Ever is about to publish his Incredibly Important game.
1. What is a Roleplaying Game:
I've been roleplaying for 42 of my 45 years of age and - as I tell my estranged children (footnote 1) - to be able to roleplay correctly this question must be answered before any others.

A roleplaying game is like a ballet. It is like a game of chess. It is like a game of American Football played by wizards and gnolls. It is *not* a conversation.
One person is the most important at the table at all times and it is the man (or woman!) with the rulebook He (or she (footnote 2)) is alike to a new god - creating a world and story for their payers to enjoy within the strict framework of a scrupulously applied rules system. You, dear reader hold in your hands that system.Footnote 1. Their loss, frankly. And only on account of Brenda's deliberate attempts to undermine me - starting with *that* Scrabble game (plurals are NOT allowed, BRENDA. You can't just go adding esses all over the place and calling it 9 points!) and culminating in *the incident* at our local Curry's Digital.
Footnote 2. Though, if I'm honest, I've never seen a woman running a roleplaying game, nor do I want to. And don't get me started on those "thems"
