shower thought just now: “permanent tournament” is a pretty good tongue-twister phrase, it’s very easy to get tripped up by the shifting “m” and “n” sounds and accidentally say “pernament” or “tourmanent”

Love that Dropout is picking up more offbeat independent comedy stuff, first Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared and now Don Hertzfeldt’s filmography. In particular, It’s Such a Beautiful Day is my favorite movie so I’m ecstatic about more people getting exposed to it.

Just finished watching Journal with Witch. Terrible title, but an excellent anime, full of well-realized characters and brimming with empathy. Gets the “Made Me Cry” ringing endorsement. I kinda love that I could tell that Kensuke Ushio was responsible for the score basically instantly.

Show me a comic page you love; no explanation needed.
From Hawkeye (2012) #3 (written by Matt Fraction, art by David Aja), in which a nude Clint Barton desperately tries and fails to fend off Tracksuit Mafia thugs with only a bedside lamp. Captions are as follows:
“Anything is a weapon if you’re in deep enough trouble. There’s no special training. No special skill. Just the belief that at any time you might have to hurt someone to stay alive. What kind of an animal walks into a room and figures out what they can use to hurt people if they have to hurt— —what kind—“

Read Tatsuki Fujimoto’s “Goodbye, Eri” in one go last night. Fantastic comic, really loved how it plays with artifice—the question of how much we see is genuine or performance, the way the edit transforms even true events into a skewed narrative, the use of film to overwrite or replace memory

Finished Super Sudokoid: Final Transmission and just started the sequel Dark Inversion. Really interesting evolution in design from the first one, which hewed much closer to the template set by Sudokuvania (overlapping grids that you generally fill out to completion or near-completion one at a time)

if I had a nickel for every TV episode this week with a supernatural emotional corruption zone that made the protagonist call one of his friends a bitch and drove the characters to all try to kill each other, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

First Ascension 10 win in Slay the Spire 2, let's go! Cascade+ with Chemical X is real silly, especially when you've got 2 of them. Final fight got a little dicey because they both decided to hide at the bottom of my deck, but I pulled through even if I got down to single-digit health.
Me playing Ironclad vs. Doormaker on Ascension 10 in Slay the Spire 2. I have only 8 HP left, but Doormaker is down to 44 HP and I'm about to hit him with a 54 damage Perfected Strike+Run history screen for the successful run, showing relics including Runic Pyramid and Chemical X, and cards including 2x Cascade+, 3x Headbutt+, 5x Perfected Strike (most of which were upgraded or enchanted), 5x Pommel Strike+, and Expect a Fight. Also, the timer shows 50:07, my fastest run yet!

Went infinite in Slay the Spire 2 (again), killed the final boss in a single turn. I can see why they're rebalancing this character, because completely breaking the game like this is a fun sometimes-treat in roguelikes but you don't really want it to be this easy to pull off.
Ironclad fighting against Queen in Slay the Spire 2. Queen is at 10/400 HP on turn 1 and is being targeted by a Pommel Strike ("Deal 15 damage. Draw 2 cards.") to finish her off. Ironclad also currently has 77/80 HP and 43/3 energy, and every card remaining in the deck has been drawn except for 1 card in the discard.

I was asked to give my thoughts on generative AI usage in games - here they are!
From the article:
"I think that until the bubble bursts, AI will be used by quite a few game companies, and perhaps even beyond the bubble," says Brandon Sheffield of Necrosoft Games, which released the RPG Demonschool last year. "Look, I am not a fool – I understand that AI has some uses. Primary among those being the devaluing of work, the cheapening of labour, the laying off of creatives, and the generation of busywork for humans to fix whatever AI generates."

"It's also useful for burning through water, raising the prices of RAM and chipsets globally, and poisoning anyone near the data centres that run them. So there are a lot of use cases for AI. From spurring on the death of the creative endeavour to dissolving our economy, AI is absolutely gangbusters at what it does. We don't use it in our studio though."

was idly scrolling back through my Fallen London journal of saved passages and this bit from the latest chapter where the usually 2nd-person narration switches to 1st-person rules. what a cool game.
I Close the Door Which I Have Opened
29 January, 2026
(Queeneater's Castle)
I have pushed away the dreams and the red and the sacrifice. I have clawed my way back into my own skull. The face I feel when I reach up and touch it is my own: not hers. Mine. Mine alone.

I can see beyond the mirrors now with mine own eyes. I see there is a breach open from the Stacks, in the chamber of the Rites of the Ruby. Dreams spill from it like blood from a strung-up bull. It wants me: I must get to it. It is here I am made and unmade: it is the source of the sanguine dreams; it is the call I must answer. It is the slab and I am the sacrifice, if I do not best it.

The mirrors around the Palace make the Flaw: it keeps any from dreaming into this mind, into what leaks from the gate, the portal, the breach. And in sealing away those dreams, the flaw is recursive: All dream of the red castle as it stops any from dreaming their way into the castle. It is a cork placed in a bottle being shaken: it will not hold.

I must unstop it. I must reach the breach and perform the Rites of the Ruby.
