Some archaeological finds may appear unremarkable and ordinary, yet they often are more interesting than any treasure, such as this Roman glass square bottle remarkably containing a rare find – preserved ointment. The waxy mass of fatty acids and glycerine contains plant fibres from...🧵1/2 📷 me

Oct. 13, 1926: The school board in Genoa, Neb., decrees that all girl students must wear skirts long enough to cover their knees—not for morality, they say, but to ensure their warmth in winter. Hazel O'Bryan (seen getting measured) is among girls protesting a dress code from "horse and buggy days."

I have not even received a workload allocation for last year (2024/25) - the same goes for everyone in my school. Other schools were very on top of calculating workloads. As I say, it is a complete mess.

I'm very torn on the very notion of workload allocation. On the one hand, I see that it could help have more equality. On the other hand, it completely ignores differences between people and it eats up so much time in and of itself.

Tbh, I don't have enough of an insight into this to give an accurate answer. Workload modelling has been a constant mess at Cardiff, going from centralisation to decentralisation and back almost on a yearly basis.

I can't personally record a time when I had 40% of my time allocated to research. Also, for years, we were told that those 1500 points were just points, not hours. Anyway, the situation is of course worse in other places, but worsening of conditions are never good.

I feel this article lacks a lot of context. I'm at Cardiff and the big change is that this model is now for the entire university. The main aspect is that allocations for most tasks have been revised down and universalised.

Only a financial journalist would look at academic publishing and think "what that sector needs is more mergers and private equity" to deal with the mess that financialisation has caused. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Mergers could help by creating savings that offset the increased costs of quality control. The industry’s biggest four groups account for two-fifths of articles published. That leaves plenty of scope to roll up the unwieldy long tail that includes university publishers and professional organisations such as IEEE. There have been a few smaller transactions so far, such as Wiley’s £337mn acquisition of Emerald Publishing in June. But Informa’s decision earlier this week to separate Taylor & Francis from its live events business may give dealmakers a boost.

Private equity can help, having already dipped a toe into the sector: Springer Nature was previously owned by companies including EQT and BC Partners. And the financials still look attractive.

Reminder that "biological sex" is not a thing that exists. It is a legal fiction in every place that refers to it. In the UK, in the equality act, it means "the sex that was written on your original birth certificate." Incidentally, it doesn't matter if that's due to a clerical error.

Alt text: placard with, in black ink & block letters: 'Quousque tandem abutere minister patientia nostra?' In smaller letters: 'Latin?' (Perhaps querying how to render ministre in Latin). Love the Ciceronian allusion, although as a student I'd tend to identify with Catilina, not the old fart.

6,877 taken into police custody since the start of the protests, 86% minors. 1,923 minors face prosecution That means 2/3 of detained children face no prosecution. Considering reports of violence in custody, racist slurs & sexualised insults, this scale of arbitrary detention of minors is staggering

Repression in France’s overseas territories gets little attention. But protests are also happening and kids are detained. In Guadeloupe, 21 schools were blocked on the 6th of October. In Le Moule, gendarmes were choking, kicking and pinning a teenager to the ground during his arrest.
