This was always - and incredibly obviously so - the business strategy for these companies. Desperate pushing of mass adoption that is worse than humans then making it basically the same cost as humans once organizations and people have been de-skilled and have little choice.

I'm old enough to remember when polio put my friends into iron lungs. We dutifully lined up at school to get vaccinated. We eradicated the disease. We protected the common good and saved lives. What RFK Jr. is doing to public health in America is a disgrace.

AI drafts your job application and reads your job application. AI writes a report and then the reader has AI summarise it. The AI on both sides of the transaction just got real with this neat fraud. You get AI to make garbage music, get AI to listen to it, and get paid! www.ft.com/content/8a47...
French streaming service Deezer said streams of AI-generated music on its platform were dominated by fraudsters, who upload and then repeatedly listen to thousands of songs to generate royalty payments to the detriment of legitimate artists.

This cannot be shared too often:
Roald Dahl on Measles: "Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything.
'Are you feeling all right?' I asked her.
'I feel all sleepy,' she said.
In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.
The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was...in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her. On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunised against measles.
...I dedicated two of my books to Olivia, the first was ‘James and the Giant Peach’. That was when she was still alive. The second was ‘The BFG’, dedicated to her memory after she had died from measles. You will see her name at the beginning of each of these books. And I know how happy she would be if only she could know that her death had helped to save a good deal of illness and death among other children."

No I will not be in your goddamn Kindle Translate beta programme.
Email to Amazon.

I was approached to put my book in the Kindle Translate beta programme for AI translation. I want to let you know that this revolts me, I will never consent to it, and my books must categorically not be used for any such programme. I realise it is supposedly opt in, however we all know that AI companies have shown no regard whatever for intellectual property or copyright.

I support human creativity, I am not going to be utilising this greedy initiative to put humans out of work, and I have no desire to have my books rendered into soulless pap by a machine.

Amazon's desire to replace human artistry and connection with Extruded Word Product, at the low low cost of burning the planet under us, is deeply depressing. Please don't approach me for any other AI initiatives. I don't want it.

Did some mandatory gen AI training. Unfortunately, I was given an opportunity to provide feedback.
While the training did the job that was intended, I see it as part of the pernicious normalisation of the use of gen AI in higher education. The case studies imply that the best way to e.g. update course materials is to use gen AI. Why not just use your knowledge and experience? Major ethical issues are passed over e.g. gen AI's training on stolen data and its reliance on exploitative labour practices. Gen AI has many negatives and few positives. It is antithetical to the critical thinking that should be central to working and studying at university. It is inherently unsafe, unethical, and irresponsible. We should be discouraging its use.

"...in the same way that my historical work is energized by detail, I think my paranormal work has to be energized by detail and place and by history. [...] Any old place, old country has got old myths and old history and a whole accretion of people's ideas around it. And London's absolutely stinking with it. So a lot of that just sort of comes together very nicely to drive the paranormal engine.”
