Oak Bay peeps, are there any progressive candidates for safe, low carbon transportation on the ballot this fall? Or will it pretty much status quo apologists again? #oakbay #bcpoli #safecycling #crd

These are personal for me, because I remember a time when I felt alienated by the news — the names, events, structures, all of it sounded alien and unwelcoming. We've created Starter Packs to remedy that. Does that sound like someone in your life?

“Here’s what we found: Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”

Big US-style trucks are killing more pedestrians in Australia – our research proves it
Pedestrians are more likely to be killed by heavier cars – and even more so if the vehicle is taller, Australian-first research has found.

We live on Fairfield Rd and had a great view of the Snowbirds and of the crazy people stuck in cars and trucks while smarter people walked and biked to the waterfront. People, there are not 20,000 empty parking spaces in this neighbourhood. Anyway, great show.

Ah it was a busy place this afternoon. We biked a circuit up around Land’s End - lovely rolling country roads with little trail connections. Though it wasn’t all by bike- we drove up to Sidney, biked from there. Corn for dinner! 🌽🌽🌽

Yes, and yes you are fortunate. I have more years of publishing history than you but, notably, a much thinner list of published works. 😆

Have you read The Correspondent? A good reminder of the value of real, tactile, mail (not to mention the novel’s other virtues).

The Kroetsch shortlist! Delighted to see 'What is Broken' on another award list. Purdy longlist and now this Robert Kroetsch shortlist. And in great company. Alberta publishers rock! Grateful to BPAA in helping get poetry out to readers. 🙏

Out of office. Mostly offline. Summer sabbatical. This is my self-accountability post. Me on a favourite bench on the grounds of Government House. (pic by Taylor Roades) Advice to self: leave ‘the devices’ powered down and walk up to the bench more often. Sit. Maybe read. Maybe just sit.

Every Canadian poet should read Catherine Owen’s brilliant book, The Other 23 & a Half Hours: Or Everything You Wanted to Know that Your MFA Didn’t Teach You. It’s one for the shelf—to buy, not to borrow. Published by Wolsak & Wynn. 📚✨❤️✍️❤️✨📚@cowenwriter.bsky.social @wolsakandwynn.bsky.social

Given that a big part of the role of the RCMP throughout history has been removing Indigenous peoples from their lands and culture, it’s not surprising the federal government is hiring more RCMP just as they plan to ramp up resource extraction on Indigenous lands.

Let's please just refer to what Mark Carney is engaging in by its proper name: disaster capitalism. A crisis is being used to push through policies benefitting corporate interests that Canadians might question more thoroughly if we weren't overwhelmed and distracted.

Bowman’s explanations are so lame. The oilers biggest problem in the past 5-6 years is absolutely awful roster mismanagement by GMs.

Yes conflicted here too. Policing, recreation, parks should be amalgamated so costs & priorities are shared. On some urban issues (bikes, density etc ) it’s hard to predict whether progressives would prevail but I think the Victoria / Saanich urban numbers will continue to grow & keep the momentum.

Getting close to being finished -- 9 homes replace one. We call this little community Folk. I'll have more info soon, but it's pretty wonderful to experience the direct connection between the front doors and balconies and the sidewalk, which aren't buried behind driveways and garages.

Yes, though the current project constructing the transit lane is a piece of the congestion. Agreed, though, that the ‘improvements’ in the form of interchanges and flyovers only induce more driving.
