The main thing AI has taught me is a profound new appreciation for human intelligence (and human writing and art!), particularly that which emerges from longstanding experience, expertise and mastery.

War is not healthy for children and other living things.
An anti war poster by Another Mother for Peace from the 60s/70s, which reads “war is not healthy for children and other living things”, in black writing on a yellow background. The text is arranged around a flower.

Of course, it is unlawful. Even the "pre-emptive" justification is half-hearted guff. Of course, it is stupid. Wise US politicians once realised a rules-based international order was in their interests. That is being thrown away. And most of all, and regardless of the above, it is wrong.

OpenAI is a menace. Two recent stories make that clearer than ever. One day you have Sam Altman denigrating humanity to defend AI. The next, WSJ reveals OpenAI could have alerted Canadian police of a potential mass shooter, but refused pressure from employees. That person went on to kill 8 people.

Sorry to get radical but I don’t think it’s my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I don’t like any part of it, so I won’t. I’m missing out? Good, that’s what I want. You’re worried about me missing out? That’s fuckin weird, man.

Watching people use ChatGPT in public feels like environmental storytelling for a sci-fi horror movie. Like seeing extras drinking a new soda that will be revealed to contain a zombie virus at the end of Act 1.

typical ai use case
4 panel comic

Panel 1:
Blue Guy is at a restaurant. Pink Guy is the waiter serving him. Blue Guy is holding his phone up to his face and shouting obnoxiously, “Gemini, what food does this place have?”
Waiter: “Sir, we have a menu”

Panel 2:
Blue Guy continues into phone: “Gemini, what burgers do they do?”
Waiter: “You can check the menu”

Panel 3:
Blue Guy: “Gemini, pizza options?”
Waiter, looking at the menu on the table in front of the Blue Guy: “It’s literally right there”

Panel 4:
Blue Guy: “Gemini, spaghetti, yes or no?”
Waiter: Rotate your eyeballs 45 degrees downward

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.

They practiced on Gaza. A reminder to stand up against injustice and atrocity everywhere. Because it’s morally required of us. But also because if they get away with it in one place, they try it in another and another and another.

The attack on Venuzela sovereignty is a straightforwardly condemnable act. America is the thief of the world & the future. It is a bipartisan regime, built on indigenous blood & fueled by stolen oil. You pay taxes to rip apart countries for the sole benefit of CEOs & shareholders. Rip it up.

The PM and Foreign Secretary should be condemning this illegal strike and breach of international human rights law. After years of arming a genocide and worshipping the “special relationship”, Trump now believes he can act with impunity.

it's wild how the positive use cases are like "save 5 minutes reading a long doc" and "write a generic email faster" and the negative use cases are "get encouraged to dive deeper in psychosis, misogyny, or suicidal thoughts" and we're still on the fence about overall value

Juries are not perfect. Many of the worst miscarriages of justice have followed jury trials. But the merit of juries is not so much the power they have, but the power they prevent others from having. They mean a judge cannot just nod-along with prosecution evidence and give a guilty verdict.
