Thousands of pregnant women in England are reporting domestic abuse. Midwives are struggling to cope
Exclusive: Analysis ‘lays bare’ something midwives already know from their day-to-day work About 20,000 disclosures of domestic abuse are estimated to be made to maternity services in England every year, analysis has found. The figures are likely to be an underestimate of the true scale of disclosures, according to experts, highlighting the role maternity professionals play in identifying abuse. Continue reading...

It’s something akin to a quiet earthquake: home nations jointly declaring their wish to be freed from English domination. A big move needs a big response, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Everywhere she dies. Everywhere I go she dies. No sunrise, no city square, no lurking beautiful mountain but has her death in it… —Norman MacCaig, “Memorial” from THE POEMS OF NORMAN MacCAIG (Birlinn, 2009) Today, 30 August, is #GriefAwarenessDay #poem #poetry birlinn.co.uk/product/the-...
Memorial
by Norman MacCaig

Everywhere she dies. Everywhere I go she dies.
No sunrise, no city square, no lurking beautiful mountain
but has her death in it.
The silence of her dying sounds through
the carousel of language, it's a web
on which laughter stitches itself. How can my hand
clasp another's when between them
is that thick death, that intolerable distance?

She grieves for my grief. Dying, she tells me
that bird dives from the sun, that fish
leaps into it. No crocus is carved more gently
than the way her dying
shapes my mind. – But I hear, too,
the other words,
black words that make the sound
of soundlessness, that name the nowhere
she is continuously going into.

Ever since she died
she can't stop dying. She makes me
her elegy. I am a walking masterpiece,
a true fiction
of the ugliness of death.
I am her sad music.

Happy birthday for tomorrow to Mary Shelley who was born on the 30th August 1797. 🎂 Did you know that in her most famous novel, she wrote that Dr Frankenstein travelled to #Orkney to create a mate for his monster? So that was nice. She must have thought it was lovely here.

It has been quite remarkable to see the gusto with which numerous politicians from other parties - including those heavily funded by supermarket owners, or personally heir to a supermarket supplier fortune - have, just before an election, rushed to declare that poor people don't deserve food.
