Under Trump, 317,000 workers are out of the government. Here are 3 of their stories
Mass firings, buyouts and heightened uncertainty led to an exodus of federal workers in 2025. More than 300,000 employees will be out of the government by the end of December.

Why We Follow Narcissistic Leaders hbr.org/2023/01/why-...

Why We Follow Narcissistic Leaders
A recent study aimed to understand narcissistic leaders and who is most likely to follow them. The results revealed a few patterns. If you are someone who is always looking out for others, empathizes with others, and seeks harmony and consensus in your team (known as agreeable followers), you are more likely to be susceptible to following a narcissistic leader. If you are someone who gets anxious and worried easily, or likes to get started on work projects early on to prevent anxiety as a deadline draws closer (known as neurotic followers), you probably prefer engaging with narcissistic leaders.

Elon Musk has succeeded in spite of the way he treats others, not because of it. Belittling is not a leadership strategy—it reflects a lack of self-control. Demeaning doesn't get results—it thwarts productivity. Disrespect for the status quo can be a virtue. Disrespect for people is a vice.

Yes. The NIH’s Undiagnosed Diseases Program helps people who get to a point where their doctor can’t figure out what’s wrong. Hundreds of patients come to the NIH Clinical Center, a part of NIH’s main research campus, for this. And it’s gov’t funded, and so at risk from Trump/Musk. 🧪
How it Works

Individuals whose conditions have eluded medical diagnoses may apply to the UDP. If, after the application is reviewed, the patient is accepted, they may be admitted to the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD for 2-5 days. Each patient undergoes a targeted clinical evaluation that may include remote DNA analysis, telehealth visits, and inpatient or outpatient visits at the NIH Clinical Center. An onsite evaluation will include diagnostic tests and expert consultations.
The patient is typically examined by a multidisciplinary medical team drawn from various NIH institutes and centers. Our team studies a patient's clinical and laboratory results for diagnostic clues while the patient is in the Clinical Center and in the weeks and months following their visit. Various medical specialties, including endocrinology, immunology, oncology, dermatology, dentistry, neurology, cardiology and genetics, from other NIH research centers and institutes contribute the expertise needed to conduct the evaluation.
Ultimately, the UDP offers patients hope for a diagnosis and the possibility of therapeutic interventions. UDP participants may receive consultation regarding their treatment when they arrive for an evaluation, but treatment is usually not provided as a component of the program. The treatment recommendations that NIH clinicians may offer remain the responsibility of the patient and the referring clinician.
In return, patients provide UDP researchers the opportunity to gain new insights about genetic and biochemical mechanisms of disease, normal cell biology, biochemistry, and physiology. Patient diagnoses include uncommon presentations of known disorders, multi-systemic complex disorders, and new disorders that have never been identified.
The UDP uses multiple genomic sequencing technologies to identify rare and new genetic causes of disease. These technologies further our understanding of the role of molecular and biochemical events that cause disease. It is ou…

Michelle Beutler cleared 67 trees off a U.S. Forest Service road in two days. It was the spring of 2023, after a record-breaking winter in the Stanislaus National Forest in California’s Sierra Nevada. Beutler, 59, worked alone with a chain saw to remove every fallen tree on a 10-mile stretch of road between the town of Long Barn in Tuolumne County and the popular Hull Creek Campground. She single-handedly finished the work so the road could open in time for Memorial Day.

As a recreation technician based out of the Summit Ranger Station in the Stanislaus National Forest, Beutler’s job was to clean toilets, pick up trash and maintain recreation sites and campgrounds up and down Sonora Pass. She’d typically drive her Forest Service truck 100 miles a day. She sprayed pit toilets with a fire hose. She wiped away graffiti and removed thousands of pounds of house trash, old furniture and useless stuff that people dumped in the forest. She extinguished hundreds of abandoned and illegal campfires. She assisted law enforcement during emergency accidents, helping officers navigate a swath of rugged forest land that she grew up on and knows intimately.
