Community leaders on Tuesday raised questions about how local institutions handle domestic violence and called for greater transparency.
The concerns from Lincoln Airport Authority Board member Vanessa Emlich, Lancaster County Commissioner Christa Yoakum and others follow Journal Star reporting on sheriff candidate Ben Houchin, who has been accused of physical and emotional abuse by his ex-wife, Maureen Brase-Houchin.
"Domestic violence is one of the most serious issues facing families in our community. Four women died in Lincoln last year in domestic violence-related homicides," Emlich said at a Tuesday news conference. "People experiencing abuse, whether alleged perpetrators are in law enforcement or not, need to know that when they call, their cases will be taken seriously, investigated thoroughly and handled consistently.
"They do not need to be labeled 'women scorned.'"
Emlich was referring to remarks from retiring Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner concerning the allegations against Houchin.
Houchin is second-in-command at the sheriff's office, where he has worked since 1993. He has denied the allegations.
Emlich and Yoakum said they were not speaking out in their capacities as elected officials, but as women. Emlich and Yoakum are Democrats, while Houchin and Wagner are Republicans.
"It's always a good time to advocate for victims and survivors, but also to talk about domestic violence to remove stigma and shame — so that people identify abuse and do seek the help they need and the support that they need," Yoakum said.
Dual investigations
Domestic violence allegations against Houchin were reviewed in 2021 by the Lincoln Police Department and the sheriff's office after Brase-Houchin reported bruising to the police after a struggle between her and Houchin over his phone.
Following police interviews with Houchin, BraseHouchin and their children, then-Police Chief Teresa Ewins felt the department did not have probable cause to make an arrest Alttext truncated.

Osborn lost a closer-than-expected 2024 race to Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb. National Democrats embraced his 2024 bid late, and local and national Democrats have been more publicly supportive of his effort this year.

Ricketts could be joined by Trump-endorsed Gov. Jim Pillen, who faces a similarly competitive race for governor. The venue is in Rep. Adrian Smith's 3rd Congressional District, one of the nation's most conservative.

Political observers will watch for whether Rep. Mike Flood and Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding attend Trump's rally. Flood's district includes Democratic-leaning Lincoln, smaller cities and rural areas that lean Republican.

As Ben Houchin campaigns to become Lancaster County sheriff, his ex-wife is publicly accusing the longtime law enforcement officer of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship — allegations Houchin denies.

In a sworn statement detailing a series of incidents from 2018 to 2021, Maureen Brase-Houchin said the chief deputy sheriff squeezed her neck in a way that made her uncomfortable, made a comment about her disappearing, and forced his way through locked doors during an argument. Brase-Houchin said her ex-husband also intimidated her by firing a gun into a nearby creek bed after yelling at her and two of the couple's children.

Houchin has denied the allegations.

“I shouldn’t have to be scared of someone being sheriff,” Brase-Houchin told the Journal Star this month. “I don’t care if he’s my past husband. It doesn’t matter. Whoever is leading in law enforcement, there shouldn't be anyone who is terrified of them, or has been terrified or has had them squeeze their neck or break down their door in rage.”

Houchin alleges Brase-Houchin was physically abusive, including scratching and punching him.

Marriage, career and campaign
Houchin started dating Brase-Houchin in 1990 when they were students at Nebraska Wesleyan University and they married in 1993. In a November 2021 statement for their divorce, he said he never threatened to hurt Brase-Houchin, never mentally abused her and never physically hurt her in any way.

Brase-Houchin has alleged in sworn statements that Houchin had been abusive since the very beginning of their relationship.

Dementia Don Old Trump fell asleep during the 9/11 ceremonies at the Pentagon. What a disgrace. Trump dozed off at multiple points during the event Friday, slumped over in his chair with his eyes closed and his head hanging down while everyone else onstage was clearly awake.
