'To dwellers in a wood almost every species of tree has its voice as well as its feature. At the passing of the breeze the fir-trees sob and moan no less distinctly than they rock; the holly whistles as it battles with itself...' -Thomas Hardy @signemaene.com welcomes you to #BookWormSat.

This fifteenth-century volume gives instructions for the blessing of bells and for exorcising people who have been cursed. The instructions are written in red, with the words to be said in black. The volume will on display for our new exhibition The Medieval Manuscripts of Marsh's Library.

My new response when anyone asks me to do anything
~ No, sir, I am not obliged to do any more. No man is obliged to do as much as he can do. A man is to have part of his life for himself.

Who was YOUR great english teacher (if you had one)? For me it was Hugh Epstein at Richmond college (RUTC). I hope he's well, wherever he is!

#WorldBeeDay! How can we plant better for bees? Bees can best see the colour purple, so plants like lavender, alliums, and catmint work great! And although herbarium specimens don't really show colour well - below are examples of Allium, Lavandula and Nepeta from Smith's and LInnaeus' Herbariums.

Edward Gorey "Books seem to me to be pestilent things ..."
Trying if a man walking along the side of a cliff clutching a big book to his chest and smiling briefly we see the feet of somebody who is just been shoved off the cliff
"Books seem to me to be pestilent things, and infect
all that trade in them...with something very perverse
and brutal. Printers, binders, sellers and others that
make a trade and gain out of them have universally
so odd a turn and corruption of mind. that they have
away of dealing peculiar to themselves, and not
conformed to the good of society and that general
fairness which cements mankind."

Akshi Singh’s IN DEFENCE OF LEISURE uses the work of Marion Milner to answer the deceptively simple-sounding question ‘how do I want to spend my free time?’ On the blog, read an extract from the book exploring the joys of reading and the freedoms to be found in second-hand bookshops: lrb.me/y23
A quote from Akshi Singh’s In Defence of Leisure, which reads: ‘It is often in bookstores that I feel something like ordinary hope – that I am not alone, that something else is possible.’

☠️| Did you know that books can be dangerous? We discovered a poisonous book today! During the 19th century, heavy metals such as arsenic and lead were sometimes added to book bindings to create the vivid green colours like in this copy of Moore's Irish Melodies (ECC E346). #PoisonBooks #booksky
Photograph showing the front cover of Moore's Irish Melodies (1866), which is a vivid green with golden decoration of a small harp in the centre, enclosed by four interlocking hearts featuring the book's title, and surrounded by swirling leaves and flowers.Photograph of an hand inside a blue nitrile glove holding the book entitled Moore's Irish Melodies which is inserted into an archival-quality zip lock bag. A handwritten note on the front reads: 'WARNING! This bookbinding contains arsenic & lead. Only handle with nitrile gloves.'
