Exactly! I once saw a writer say that when he saw something that seemed to go against character or lore, his reaction was never “That wouldn’t happen!” It was always to think “HOW would that happen? What would make that happen?” Way more creative and fun

“As a writer…you are the freest person that ever was.” Don’t let genAI ever take away this freedom.
“See, the thing is, as a writer you are free. You are free. You are about the freest person that ever was. Your freedom is what you have bought with your solitude, your loneliness. You are in the country where you make up the rules, the laws. You are both dictator and obedient populace. It is a country nobody has ever explored before. It is up to you to make the maps, to build the cities. Nobody else in the world can do it, or ever could do it, or ever will be able to do it again.”

I made a ✨Nighttime✨ version! 🏺🍷🌙💋
Scene description: In this scene we start next to a crowded thermopolium where men drink and women wave out the window from the rooms above. On the street, one man walks to the pub, another gazing up at the women leaning out of the window. Giggling lupae in togas also look up at the window, while across the road the brothel owner shouts and points for them to get to work. Their sister has already found a client further up the street, and the two are watched by a tearful man sitting at the thermopolium (her boyfriend?). A similar transaction is occurring in the distant background, where a man walks towards a beckoning toga-clad lady, whilst reaching into his purse to pay her pimp. Finally, unrelated to the street’s commerce, a litter carried by four enslaved men enters the scene in the very distance. Inside are high-status Romans returning from a party at their friends, and one of them starts to pull the curtain closed to hide from the debauchery on the streets.

I’m in Barcelona this week, so expect a LOT of photos of twiddly architecture, since Barcelona does it so well. To start, here’s Gaudi’s Casa Mila (1906–10), better known as La Pedrera (The Quarry) because of its undulating rock face vibe. (Am pacing myself with all things Gaudi, so didn’t go in.)

The main auditorium at the Palace of Catalan Music is SUPREMELY fancy. Everything is stained glass or mosaic or tiles or twiddly stonework, and the central skylight looks like a sunburst surrounded by singing ladies, and droops down from the ceiling like a great big Art Nouveau boobie. It’s amazing.
