That's very interesting, a question I've often pondered. There are examples of natural peatland forest in Scandinavia, I believe. Will have a read.

I'm probably a bit over optimistic. But I took "America will no longer be able to afford guns" and thought: good.

There's a reason Dutch adolescents are the happiest, and it's cycling. From a young age they can get around by themselves, enabling health, social lives, decision-making and agency. This policy driver (build safe cycle infrastructure, reallocate space from driving to cycling) is so often overlooked.

Indeed. In Exeter, we're in the position of fighting a painted cycle lane because cllrs want to remove a modal filter on a strategic cycling route

Exactly this. The tuition fee kinda takes care of itself, it helps fund globally competitive universities. The limit on maintenance is the punishing bit. But actually that's also true for Italian kids if they decide to study away from their home town (which they don't often)

Very depressing that this highly misleading statistic is now being promoted by Conservative Shadow Home Secretary. Philp contrasts “foreign born” with “British citizens” but a lot of the people in the “foreign born” group ARE British citizens.

The only time I ever silenced a group of teachers was when I described (as a local journalist) what I was expected to do, and how much I was paid (not enough to run the car i was expected to possess and maintain)

I wonder when SWP will get there. Still some very challenging restoration to do at Cut Hill. But lovely to see (some) green on Dartmoor amidst so much brown. There's still some water there

You’ve got a presentation of the ‘adaptionist’ mindset without asking what adaptation would actually cost. And worst of all there’s a failure to explain that until you get to net zero you just have to keep adapting forever.

One of the most frustrating things on social media is the idea that all "rule-breaking" on the roads is equal. Sure, cyclists do run stop signs and pedestrians "jaywalk" (scare quotes because jaywalking is bullshit), but those are not the same as drivers running reds or trucks blocking bike lanes!
Here it is cars, bikes, scooters and pedestrians who don't wait for stop lights nor stop signs. And vars and trucks block intersections and bike lanes.

Said this before, will again. Badenoch is the most dangerous figure in British politics. She's not as extreme as Farage or Lowe, but her impact is more pernicious. She actively prevents the British centre-right from adopting moderate positions, and thereby facilitates the radicalisation process.

In 2024, 11,337 children under 16 were injured on roads in Great Britain, according to the DfT. These include 42 killed and 2,357 seriously injured, a number little changed from a decade earlier. Most were not killed or injured in front of schools but in the rest of the road network.

Autonomous vehicle companies shouldn’t be picking and choosing which traffic laws they follow. That goes for parking in bike lanes as well as for speeding and blocking crosswalks.

We also need to have a more honest conversation about how driving, no matter how useful to the person doing it, imposes harms onto other people. Until we try to reduce those harms as much as possible, it’s not clear how we’re going to take the steps needed to create a safer, healthier country 8/10
