Who knows what's really going on here but it's very funny to imagine the mightiest military the world has ever seen being scared off by some entrepreneurial Londoners with a few vans. The 2020s equivalent of Del Boy and Rodney.

What a moment to capture, & what an eye from story telling. Fond memories of a political staffer grabbing a replica Iron Age axe out of the hands of a TD at a museum event to avoid something similar after this photo was taken! RIP to a great photographer.

every branch of right-wing pseudo-intellectualism is named something like "super-rational objective humanist altruism" and then you look at what they believe and it's some variant of "corporations should legally be able to murder kids"

Remember when us phil-tech types said effective altruism was just utilitarianism taken to its worst possible extents? This is what we meant: Real harm for unquantifiable potential benefit. "…'we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology….'"

Always funny when people get pissy about, of all things, *work to rule*. They are still doing their jobs, to the letter of the law in fact. That is causing problems is a serious indictment of how much extra people are expected to do in their job.

"BRITAIN BECOMES DUMP FOR THE NAXI EXILES. Scores of Jews and other exiles are being smuggled into England in small foreign ships, for £25 a time." Daily Mirror, 1938. Sound familiar?
Headline: Britain becomes dump for the Nazi exilesSCORES of Jews and other exiles, abandoning their homes in the Nazi terror, are being smuggled into England by the captains of small foreign ships who slink inside the three-mile limit at night and put ashore their human cargoes for £25 a time.
This smuggling, once sporadic, is now a racket earning thousands of pounds weekly for captains of French, Dutch and Belgian trawlers.
It was exposed entirely at Hove, yesterday when two foreign seamen were gaoled for smuggling a German in at Shoreham harbour last Monday.
Britain's immigration officers are helpless. They know that Hitler is dumping his unwanted people here. They cannot stop other Mid-European Governments seizing on Britain's lethargy to lower their own unemployment figures.
Every day refugee Spaniards, Jews, Ger mans and Austrians are slipping into Britain Employment agencies are inundated by fran-tic appeals from foreigners who, scared by European unrest, want British security.

People are pointing out (understandably) that there’s an irony or inconsistency here, but of course there isn’t really: the entire point of far right politics is that they (favoured group) have a right to do & say what they want, and you (opponent/ other unfavoured person) have no rights at all

It sometimes feels as if almost any deviation away from the default governance mode of outright cronyism over the last 50 years has been forced by the EU. Changes often made in one area in the hope the EU won't notice a large amount of cronyism and cute-hoorism happening in another area.

One to add to the pile alongside the Minister for Foreign Affairs treating a Meta lobbyist as if he's an ambassador or visiting head of state.
A screenshot of a post by Helen McEntee, Minister for Foreign Affairs, posing for a photo with Dualta O Broin of Meta. The text in the post reads "Great to meet with Meta yesterday to discuss priorities for Ireland's upcoming EU Presidency. Our discussion focused on the importance of strengthening European competitiveness, reducing unnecessary regulatory complexity, and creating the conditions for innovation to thrive. As Europe faces increasing global competition, it is vital that we support businesses to scale, attract investment and drive digital transformation across the Union."
