Tried smoking bananas last night and learned that we should have been doing desserts in the smoker this whole time
A halved banana sits open, with a caramel syrup on top and two scoops of vanilla ice cream to the right.

Had my car towed today because the hole in the parking pass that goes around the rearview mirror was a bit too small and it popped off and fell to the floorboards. $460. So my day was just peachy!

This is really sad, and incredibly written. And I say this as a Beck fan who has seen him on tour twice and even likes his (admittedly somewhat lacking in feeling) recent albums.

I don’t get why we’re treating engineers as if they somehow have especially deep thoughts on human learning or how societies function.

I find myself more devastated by this than I would have expected. Annie Dillard’s words have comforted and accompanied me through some of my profoundest struggles. I hope she rests in peace and curiosity. We are impoverished by the loss of her.

It's weird that so many of you are always apologizing to some cool guy you're imagining from 15 years ago before you can say Macklemore is good and cool. That cool guy is probably dead. He was having a hard time. You are free.

Listen, I fully acknowledge that I know nothing about baseball and wasn’t aware of the implementation of the NHL’s salary cap. That said, I firmly believe it’s one of the best things about the NHL and more professional leagues should seriously consider some form of it.

I think I was vaguely aware of something being worrying with computers and that something weird was going on with the President in 1999, but I didn’t understood at all. Like, I knew the President was an important person that people talked about a lot but that was basically it. I would have been 4.

I just accidentally overcooked my crockpot dinner into an inedible sludge and reheating a frozen enchilada after all that work is a kind of let down I’m not sure I’ve experienced before

I think one of my frustrations with House of the Dragon is that no one has thought past the next five minutes. Sometimes someone does something clever, but it only helps them briefly. One of the best things about Game of Thrones was that almost everyone had schemes on schemes.

Gratefully, I’ve generally been in good physical health and have had good doctors so nothing negative from me. On the merely quirky/positive side: “wow, your veins are really beautiful!”

Confirmation bias makes AI-dreams even more dangerous. I asked a question about the prevalence of a health issue in a strain of mice. Google AI gave an answer: 1-4% and 3 references. Looked good but I checked the references. 1-4% - NOT in any of them. And I almost did not check! Sheesh....

Today, I started reading a memoir about miscarriage that had intrigued me. Early on, the author seemed to brag about tons of people emailing them to disclose their own miscarriages. That’s a bit weird, I think.

This is the correct take. No external pressure should ever be allowed to make refereeing decisions. Regardless of whether the call was good, refereeing and adapting to calls made by refs is a key part of all sports. A truly brilliant team will be able to adapt.

As a fan of Star Trek & other science fiction, I don’t mind if science is fudged for dramatic effect. But when the scientific process & scientists themselves are misrepresented, inserting secrecy & efforts at social control, it contributes to distrust in science & misconceptions that can cause harm.

I can’t express how much I hate horse race election reporting. The moment the polls closed, somebody won. We just reveal the winner as we count. No one “pulled ahead”, no one “got ___ more votes since the last update”. All of those phenomena are completely artificial!

In first grade, we were practicing subtraction and I raised my hand to ask my teacher—who I trusted profoundly because she was an long-time friend of my grandma—what happens when you subtract a big number from a small one. She brushed me off. I pushed. Finally, she told me that YOU CAN’T.

People who want kids should try their best to be at least intellectually prepared for parenting to be an exercise in progressively giving up control over their children. Learn that every ounce of control a parent has over their children is temporary and borrowed from the child themselves.

As a kid in a family that didn’t talk about politics, The Colbert Report was one of the first ways I learned about politics. I’m glad my intro was from him and not from one of the people he so brilliantly satirized. Sad to see him go. In some small way, I think we’re all a little worse off for it.
