Honestly, if cable came back so that I could fully customize the set of channels I get—like, opting in/out of each individual one—but make only one payment, I would be a pretty happy camper. This will probably never happen, of course, but a person can dream.

My piano is being tuned right now (it’s pretty flat) and every time a note slides up into the right pitch, I get a little frisson of joy. Music is so great.

I watched the entire first season because *so* many people told me to watch it and I like Jennifer Coolidge. I was so bored? I genuinely don’t get what people see in it, and thought that Beef did the whole minor-drama-escalates-wildly thing much better.

I agree and have multiple mental illnesses, for what it’s worth.

This happened behind the double oven installed in the wall of my kitchen. In my brand new house. I kicked up a storm with the builder. My house could have burned down!

Tried smoking bananas last night and learned that we should have been doing desserts in the smoker this whole time

A halved banana sits open, with a caramel syrup on top and two scoops of vanilla ice cream to the right.

Had my car towed today because the hole in the parking pass that goes around the rearview mirror was a bit too small and it popped off and fell to the floorboards. $460. So my day was just peachy!

This is really sad, and incredibly written. And I say this as a Beck fan who has seen him on tour twice and even likes his (admittedly somewhat lacking in feeling) recent albums.

Boy howdy are engineers the last people I’d expect to have anything useful to contribute to these conversations.

They don’t know anything about psychology or sociology or history or policy. Their expertise is math and coding, and they mostly hate reading, so they’re not exactly self-teaching the humanities. Even when they apparently do like to read, like Huang, they still say exclusively dumb stuff.

I don’t get why we’re treating engineers as if they somehow have especially deep thoughts on human learning or how societies function.

Obviously there are other ways to get this; I’m sensitive to that as a first generation college graduate. My high school-educated grandmother is the most intelligent person I know! But higher education is probably the easiest way (if you have access), and we allow it to be denigrated at our peril.

I was just talking about this with my husband. Learning makes us better citizens no matter what the topic of the learning is, and the greatest thing I got through all my time in college was how to learn. How to really get into the gritty.

Utah Mormon here! He checks some boxes for LDS Rs: businessman, war is tolerable but not desirable, talks about founders reverentially, abortion take lines up with Church’s stance. One notable exception would be that he’s probably a bit to the right of a typical LDS person on immigration.

“we are created, created, sojourners in a land we did not make, a land with no meaning of itself and no meaning we can make for it alone. Who are we to demand explanations of God? (And what monsters of perfection should we be if we did not?) We forget our-selves, picnicking; we forget where we are.”

Also, the skill to do it is less common than the knowledge. And very few people want to it. Obviously state actors/terrorists will, and that’s scary. But I’m about as worried about it as I would be about a ricin attack or a bombing. Maybe that’s naive of me though. I honestly have no idea.

Lizzy Stone @lizzy-stone.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

Frankly, you probably could now even without AI. Certainly you could easily learn to make some compounds that are basically chemical weapons, or a bomb. I think it’ll be similar—the reason it won’t happen much is because the reagents and equipment needed are regulated and expensive.

010

Lizzy Stone @lizzy-stone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

It’s also seemingly impossible for a small number of superstars to carry a team to the cup (see Edmonton). The cap means teams have to balance their stars with real depth.

000

Lizzy Stone @lizzy-stone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

I realize that it benefits owners financially, but it also benefits the sport. There’s lots of reasons sports prediction models can never get the NHL champ right, but one of them is the cap. It makes so many of the teams competitive that you really don’t know who’ll win.

100

Lizzy Stone @lizzy-stone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

I unironically stan the hard cap

100

Lizzy Stone @lizzy-stone.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

Listen, I fully acknowledge that I know nothing about baseball and wasn’t aware of the implementation of the NHL’s salary cap. That said, I firmly believe it’s one of the best things about the NHL and more professional leagues should seriously consider some form of it.

Did you see the fuggler things at Costco recently? They had a pretty upsetting frog.

A very creepy frog plush toy, standing upright. It’s mostly lime green with a cream-colored belly. Its eyes are bulbous and mostly closed. Directly between the eyes are two black nose holes. Below the eyes and nose is a very side, pink mouth, populated with four very human-looking teeth. Nightmarish.
