Adding horror to that list of genres that I keep trying because everyone's talking about them, and then remember why I don't read that genre. (In horror's case, usually in the middle of the night.)

Ooh, interesting. I often agree with your take on books - but I loved The Tainted Cup, and thought the sequel was even better! (It felt like he'd set up the rules by book 2, so could get on with the story/expanding the world.) I also read a lot of crime, so will think about your comments re that!

For any US folks interested in When There Are Wolves Again, the ebook and hardback editions should currently be available via distribution. I think the UK rights team are making another attempt to find a US publisher; if no luck there, I'm hoping the paperback can also be distributed soon 🐺

I want to hide and to be seen
I'm not sure I want to write this - it's not my suffering and there's already so much bullshit on this that I don't want to add more to it. Where I've landed after a sleepless night is this - I am responding to Prof. Jason Arday's death in complicated ways and I need to write about them, not least because I have (White) friends who need to understand better what it's like to live with this.

I notice a lot of academics masking what was clearly once a northern accent in podcast interviews - makes me very sad. (But then, I lost my accent by living away from north-east England for too much of my 20s and 30s and being desperate to fit in, wherever I was...)

Liz O @lizottosson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
I like 'yous' for specificity. Which is not an Americanism, but I came to that conclusion because I also decided that I like 'y'all' because, well, it's accurate.

I've always tried to combine both, and... it's definitely a balancing act! Sometimes I think about separating them out, but when I'm thinking about politics in my writing as well, it seems to make sense to keep them under one hat.

Hirsch directly addresses this in this Guardian piece:
Extract from a Guardian article by Afua Hirsch: 'In fact, Harriman’s first response to the attack was an unambiguous post expressing “solidarity to the Jewish community”. When Harriman correctly discovered that there had been a third, Muslim victim of the same attacker on the same day, he – like many of us – asked why many news headlines, in news organisations including HuffPost and Sky, and why the Metropolitan police itself, did not immediately give this victim the same status and prominence. This seems to speak to an unwritten rule in the British media – that a zero-sum game exists between recognising Jewish victims and Muslim victims, between recognising antisemitism and equally recognising Islamophobia.'

Finished When There are Wolves Again by @catamaroon.bsky.social last night. Such a beautiful, heartfelt novel, filled with love and hope and rage for our future. Very #Thrutopian writing, and given its recent BSFA best novel win, it really seems to be striking a chord with readers. I loved it. 💚
Cover of the book 'When There are Wolves Again' by E. J. Swift, featuring a wolf (or a wolf-dog) with a superimposed pattern of tree trunks (or stalks) leading to flourishing plants.
