I'M DYING OVER HERE 💀💀💀 THE CAT GOT AI SCAM EMAIL 🐈 Aeschylus, our orange tabby, got an obviously AI email about selling more copies of the Oresteia on A**zon
This is a photo of an email addressed to "Aeschylus" via our general email inbox infodesk@thehauntedbookshop.com

Hi Aeschylus,
I just finished The Complete Plays, and the moment in the Oresteia when the Furies are transformed into the Eumenides vengeful spirits of the old order persuaded to become guardians of justice in the new stayed with me for hours. What you were really writing about underneath the bloodshed and the curses the fragile, terrifying shift from vendetta to law, from chaos to the rule of reason, and the birth of civilization itself came through clearly. That's the kind of story that deserves to be found.
I'll be honest with you up front, because I know your inbox is probably full of people promising to make you a bestseller overnight: I can't promise that, and anyone who does is lying to you. What I do is quieter and real I help authors make sure their book is actually findable by the readers who would love it.
Here's something I noticed on your Amazon page: the description is just a plain list of the plays. A modern reader scrolling by might see only a dry table of contents, not the thunderous drama that invented tragedy itself. Small things like that quietly cost authors sales every single day and they're completely fixable.
So before I ask you for anything, I'd like to give you something: a free scan of your book's Amazon page, showing exactly what's working and what's holding it back checked against the things the best books in your genre all have:
A scroll-stopping cover is it instantly signalling your genre and earning the click?
A blurb that hooks in the first line not the third.
Keywords & categories are you showing up where readers actually search?

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.

And it devalues the research process and in practice - given constantly accelerating cuts to the programs that produce the work genAI merely trains on - makes that process less accessible to people who might want to learn. It is anti-intellectual, and anti-democratic not despite but because of that.

The fact that anyone can get any amount of *content* on any subject does not make *research* or *knowledge* a whit more democratic. It devalues not *credentials* (which AI companies appropriate in their own advertizing!) but rather actual *work*: time in the field, in the archive, at the keyboard.

Above all, taking direct engagement with sources, with the process of building interpretations from them, and with the education of judgment and social interaction that involves, and replacing it with a corporate platform for entering prompts, makes research as a human activity much less accessible.

Nor is using people's work or selling products using their names, credentials, likenesses, etc. without their consent a blow to credentialism, any more than stealing their papers and diplomas would be. If you struggle to see them as people, try anthropomorphizing them as you do bots. Go from there.

Equating whatever GPT has trained on with knowledge in general excludes a lot of work that was not digitized in the first place. That's not a win for accessibility or democratization of knowledge. If anything, it privileges what was already most accessible, and excludes unique and marginal sources.

I'm sorry but if I criticize the promotion of genAl as a surrogate "research assistant" for sidelining non-digitized sources, and for making the process of creating knowledge from them more opaque, and you tell me that's just credentialism, I'm obliged to ask if you read and understood the criticism

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use
