Last month, Tim Riley and I spoke at an @altcoolsig.bsky.social webinar on the rise in copyright trolling. Part of that presentation involved a survey to assess the impact. We would really appreciate it if you would submit a response and share with your networks forms.office.com/pages/respon...

I propose to make universal the old policy of the Blackfriars conference at the American Shakespeare Center: If you do not end your paper on time, you will be forced to exit, pursued by a bear. Literally, a bear will come take your paper from you.
The organizer, introducing the bear on stageA tardy speaker, trying to fend off the bear as he/she leans forward patiently.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So: In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.

Hamilton original broadway soundtrack. It’s 2hrs 22mins so less repeats of songs, but the more time you listen to it solid the more you appreciate the leitmotifs…plus it’s such excellent music. (Yes, I love musicals)

Today's early Spring semester reminder that if your academic library doesn't have an eBook you want and/or tells you they can't provide it, it is most likely not the library staff's fault. We can't buy what vendors refuse to sell.

AJP Taylor: not a referencing guy
Extract from Taylor’s Course of German History:

“It will be apparent. no doubt, to the reader that I have written this book by lifting facts from a great many other books and, from a few, even ideas.
The American method, in such cases, is to list all the books that have been pilfered; I prefer the English method of mentioning none. If the reader does not accept my credentials, he will not be induced to do so by a display of the sources from which my plumes are borrowed.”

Since this was described as an official statement from their communications department, I am sharing it here. It is, imo, the standard every publisher should be meeting immediately. I'm grateful to our team at Tor for being so on top of this. (And also Montlake who registered everything.)
We are writing to provide an update regarding copyright registration concerns in connection with the Anthropic class action settlement.

As you may have heard, the settlement agreement for the Bartz v. Anthropic case has been filed for preliminary approval. The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has prepared a detailed press release available here and a list of FAQs available here.

In reviewing our records, we discovered that U.S. copyright registration has not been obtained for some of our authors’ works. From what we currently understand, this was largely our mistake and we take full responsibility. If your work was excluded from the settlement for this reason, we will make you whole by paying you what you otherwise would have been paid under the settlement.

We are also taking corrective action. Our team is conducting a thorough review to identify affected works and close any registration gaps. While this issue is understandably concerning, we want to reassure you that your work has always been protected by U.S. copyright law from the moment of its creation. Registration has implications in the context of lawsuits, but not for the fact of protection.

We regret this error and are committed to making it right. Please reach out to copyrights@macmillan.com with any questions.

Update: we just received a statement from Macmillan/Tor taking full responsibility for failing to register copyright, promising to make us whole and pay us any settlement money we lost out on due to that error, and promising to find & correct the lapses that caused this. Every pub should do this.
