🧵 Some years ago I got a printed replica of a 1613 fortune-telling book called the Dodechedron (sic) of Fortune, an English translation of an older French book. You choose a query, roll a D12, and using a chart and the results of the roll, find the answer to your question. It is silly and fun.
The title page of the book The Dodechedron (sic) of Fortune; or, The Exercise of a Quick Wit, published in 1613.

It's interesting how well Ray Bradbury predicted smart houses, but didn't figure out that the computers could actually handle paying your bills for you as well, instead of just telling you when to pay them.

Happy "There Will Come Soft Rains" Day! Ray Bradbury's greatest short story takes place on August 4, 2026 (in most editions; see alt text). If you haven't seen it, you must watch this incredibly disturbing animated Soviet version (Uzbekfilm, 1984.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oxP...
Image of text, from Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains":

"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

(The date was April 28, 1985 in the original printing; very recent editions give the date as August 4, 2057.)

#3dprinting complaint: If a model is labeled and photographed showing it is VASE MODE, it is an AH move to rate it low on Makerworld for "lack of strength." My dude, vase mode is ONE LAYER THICK by definition. That it broke when you took it off the plate is a you issue not the model's fault.

Two lava lamps. On the left, a lamp with gold hardware, purple liquid, and orange wax. On the right, a candlepower lamp with yellow hardware, clear liquid, and orange wax. On the left, an abstract sculpture on top of a book with mid-century art.

I grew up in Seattle, then lived in Minneapolis (briefly) as a young adult. The first Good Friday I was there the freeways were empty and many of the stores were closed. When I asked why, people looked at me like an idiot. But Good Friday wasn't usually a work holiday in Seattle.

WTF, Krylon! (Left, an item -- a lava lamp cap -- painted with so-called "plum purple" spray paint. Right, the can showing how much false advertising this was.) I went ahead and painted the lamp anyway, thinking it might look OK, but I'm not thrilled with the result.
A hand holds a can of Krylon "Premium Metallic Plum Purple" spray paint. Next to it, on a patterned surface, is a painted item. The item is a metallic coppery-brown color, which doesn't match the purple color described on the can's label.
