#FridayReads I reached the satisfying end to Cool Machine by @colsonwhitehead.com, the final book of the wonderful Harlem Trilogy. I had such a great time following these characters and their crimes across the decades. (Book pictured here atop a walnut dining table I hope Carney would approve of.)

My favorite read so far this year. Root Rot is about a large family visiting their lake side estate. It focuses on the kids and how the start to discover unsettling things in the woods as they play. I love the folkloric style of the prose and the haunting ending.

The book is a sequel to the 2025 cozy science fiction novella Automatic Noodle, set in the near future, “about a labor movement gaining steam in the pneumatic delivery tubes surrounding a robot-run noodle restaurant,” per the publisher. In real life, I finished reading What Am I, A Deer? yesterday, and especially enjoyed how much it became about karaoke. In dream life, I was attending an event for the book and was one of the few people there who'd already read it. I talked up how great it was. Dream come true!
