So excited to unbox my new novel that all I can do is babble "this is great!" And "this is awesome!" LOL

While browsing in a used bookstore, I picked up Living By Fiction by Annie Dillard. I don't have much familiarity with her work, but have been curious since her recent death. This is a book of literary criticism about the art of fiction.
Paperback book: Living By Fiction by Annie Dillard, author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek & An American Childhood.

Cover blurb from the Saturday Review: "A bold, provocative book that celebrates the necessity of art."

The cover image is a painting of a landscape, with someone standing in a stream fishing.

I've heard great things about The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman by @deeshaphilyaw.bsky.social, and I can't wait to meet the woman depicted in this cover illustration!
Hardcover book: The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman by Deesha Philyaw. The cover illustration is a black woman sitting casually on a throne with a wide stance, one leg over the arm of the chair. She's wearing a sharp green outfit and has a crown perched on her knee. There's an apple on the floor.

This is the Book of the Month edition, with the BOTM logo in the top right corner.

I learned about Soul Jar: Thirty-one Fantastical Tales by Disabled Authors (edited by @anniecarlauthor.bsky.social) during the recent @flightsoffoundry.bsky.social online con. I attended a couple of great panels about disability including @ravenoak.bsky.social, who appears in the anthology.
Paperback of Soul Jar: Thirty-one Fantastical Tales by Disabled Authors

Edited by Annie Carl

Foreword by Nicola Griffith

Cover blurb by Keith Rosson, author of Fever House: "Like disability itself, these stories are a myriad of things: rich, nuanced, furious, complicated, joyous, determined. They are wild howls of imagination that simultaneously manage to showcase a vast spectrum of true, lived experience. Let Soul Jar be an arrow sent out into the world."

The cover text appears on top of a dreamy background image that includes a woman's face surrounded by floating hair (as if she's in water or zero gravity), the top of an open bottle, and the head of something like a lizard.

I also ordered The Department of What it (Really) Means to be Human by @darusha.ca some time ago, but the book has been out of stock until a recent distribution change. An "optimistic near-future literary SF mystery" sounds great to me!
Paperback book: The Department of What it (Really) Means to be Human by M. Darusha Wehm. The cover is pale gray with yellow text and a design of scattered circles that appear to be pills.

I pre-ordered Revolution in the Heart: Stories Inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin (edited by @jonathanstrahan.bsky.social) more than a year ago, thinking it was about to be published. After some confusion about why the order hadn't shipped, I noticed the 2026 release date. But now that's finally now!
Hardcover of Revolution in the Heart: Stories Inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin

Edited by Jonathan Strahan

Author list on the cover: Alaya Dawn Johnson, Charlie Jane Anders, Ai Jiang, Ann Leckie, Karen Joy Fowler, Molly Gloss, & many more

The cover design involves circles and clockwork gears. The central circle contains the title information, on a black field. Circles around the edges are windows opening up onto lush landscapes.

Happy birthday, Jeanne Villepreux-Power! This octopus scientist and aquarium inventor was born #OTD September 25th, 1794! However, many lovely tributes were posted yesterday, because her birthday has often been erroneously published as September 24th. Why? Let's geek out about calendars...
A grayscale digital drawing of Jeanne Villepreux-Power, slightly more than a bust--head, shoulders, crossed arms. She is smiling contentedly and perhaps a little smugly. In a stylized circle around her are all the animals she studied: snail, marten, butterfly, turtle, sea star, and of course the octopuses--common octopus and argonaut, both male and female. It was drawn by me (Danna Staaf).

#FridayReads I'm getting close to the end of Exit Party by @emilymandel.bsky.social, and I don't want it to be over! This story of alternate USes and doubled characters is so compelling and strange and wonderful.
Book cover of Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel (bestselling author of Station Eleven). The cover illustration is split into a top half and an upside-down bottom half, in different color palettes. The top is a cityscape of Los Angeles, with palm trees and skyscrapers, in blues and greens. The bottom is an upside-down Paris, with Eiffel Tower, in oranges and reds.
