I found the online/B&N/amazon blurb for my book had been suddenly rewritten several months ago (my book came out in 2023) and it didn't quite match, you know, the actual plot - gave it Bourne vibes when my book leans more Emily St. John Mandel'ish. I assume my publisher was using AI. *sigh*

Interesting - I also didn't know it was done in other programs. Funny that so many profs want to crush spirits at the outset, what a strange thing to do. I finished my aero degree and a book, and I suspect I'm not actually that much of an outlier for it!

(This isn't the point of your lovely story, but I had to laugh as I recognized this speech from the start of my aerospace engineering degree except they said 1 of 3. So, not quite as dire, lol)

I understand why the system operates this way, but I still spend a lot of time thinking about how many brilliant books we are probably missing out on because an author is genius at writing a book but absolute garbage at distilling it down to an elevator pitch/query blurb.

Discovered a tv show about a woman who wakes up in a spot of trouble with no memory of who she is or how she got there, she just has a note telling her her memory was wiped intentionally & she is in danger. Sounds familiar! 🤣 (If you don't know, my novel Adrift starts the same way, but on a boat.)

These scam emails from people pretending to be editors at publishing houses with email addresses like namePublishingHouse@aol.com are SO ANNOYING. Has anyone replied to find out what the cash grab ends up being? How do they pivot from pretending to be a big name editor to asking an author for $$?

Just 3 days left in the Kickstarter for WILD DYES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST! Snag one of the last hand-dyed yarn rewards, or simply pre-order the book and help to support the highest print cost we've ever faced. We couldn't make our books without you ❤️ www.kickstarter.com/projects/nin...

I just spent two days in Kelowna BC and it was somewhere around 33 - 35 degrees (92-95) and I do not function over 26 degrees and HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE HERE? I saw people JOGGING. Voluntarily, not because a bear was chasing them. I was malfunctioning just walking down the street in the shade.

When I drafted Adrift I included scenes with air quality issues and people wearing masks. While I was revising Adrift, BC experienced the worst wildfire season in history--it has since been topped. Summer weather now regularly includes "smoke". I'd never experienced this in Vancouver prior to 2017

I'm so angry this is our every summer now -watching Canada burn, watching ecosystems die and homes burn, & we just keep digging oil out of the ground. Our politicians keep spending public dollars on the oil industry; subsidies, more pipelines, sending our clean energy to run LNG plants. Insanity.

I set out to finally do one of those graphics where you pithily convey what your novel is about with a few words and loopy arrows and then I had a breakdown trying to explain what genre the thing is that I wrote and have been talking about for three years. 😂 ENJOY! ! Go buy a copy! Thanks!

I am in this boat 100%. If I let my brain know there is a shortcut, it will be that much more challenging to get it to do the hard work alone. And I do not want to be beholden to an external tool forevermore.

OH HELLO! Genre-bending is my jam! My publisher (Sourcebooks) markets my book as a thriller which has always puzzled me as I thought I wrote a literary-leaning speculative puzzle of sorts, lol If anyone is looking for a near-future story with memory wiping, may I suggest award-winning: ADRIFT
Novel Adrift by Lisa Brideau showing that it is a character-driven entertaining, realistic, cerebral, and fun story. Author - white woman with short dark hair, smiling while sitting at a table at the famous Munro's bookstore behind a stack of signed copies of Adrift by Lisa Brideau which is a staff pick.

Very helpful primer! The reliance on Bookscan data is even more fascinating now that I can compare to my royalty statements; in my case (Sourcebooks title) bookscan is reporting about 55% of actual sales. I'd love to see data from other authors on this - is this fairly typical/low/high?
