Happy release day to BE A FOOL! This book is made of joy. It's like a Gen-X nostalgic fever dream of all the best parts of childhood brought into adulthood—making bad art, riding bikes, modifying those bikes so they're truly outrageous, skate parks, making your own skate parks, camcorder movies...
Happy Book Release Day! Featuring the cover of Be a Fool, by the Zenga Bros. Now available in bookstores and online in Canada, the U.S., and beyond.

There are publisher and writer groups (mostly in the U.S. that I know of) that try doggedly to position public libraries as harmful to the book business and it is one of the most nonsensical, wildly shortsighted, profoundly offensive business-related positions I have ever encountered. Ever ever.

Disruptive times call for examination of assumptions, commitments, plans. Something I am sticking with is not selling our books on Amazon. I won't lie, the day may come when we won't be able to avoid that slice of the market. But for now, we hold firm.

I wish I'd had the forethought to track the number of hours I've spent working on cross-border shipping in the last year. It's responsible for at least 1/2 the emails I never got around to responding to, an innumerable number of 4:30am wakeups that kiboshed my cognitive function, and SO MUCH STRESS.

I have seen patterns use a different wording in the materials list, say something like "needles in a size to get gauge with your yarn - for most knitters, something between 4 and 5mm is appropriate". It's clunky, but I like it. Anyway, no great conclusions other than maybe "buy my math book"... 🤣

Spotted on Threads recently. So happy this knitter made a swatch! Yay! But prompted by how this is phrased, I want to talk about a misconception I encounter distressingly often... Here's the key fact: THE NEEDLE SIZE YOU USE TO GET GAUGE IS UTTERLY IRRELEVANT. 🧵🧶

It's a ways off but space is limited so... Join author Jess Driscoll for a chill social evening and learn how to sew a patch pocket to clothing or anything else! September 1, 6:00–8:00 PM, at the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch. FREE, but registration required!
vpl.bibliocommons.com
Meet the Makers: The Magic of Pockets, a Sewing Workshop with Jess Driscoll
Discover why, in modern history, women's fashion deliberately sacrificed functionality for silhouette, while traditionally men's clothing accommodated up to 17 pockets in a single suit. The patriarchy and capitalism have shaped our wardrobes for long enough! Beyond its brief yet thorough explanation of why feminine clothing lacks pockets, The Magic of Pockets, empowers you to take action. Canadian author Jess Driscoll transforms frustration into practical rebellion, teaching you to add the pockets you deserve to the clothes you already own. Jess will lead the group through the process of hand sewing a basic patch pocket to an item that you own, be it a dress, a tote bag, a skirt or pair of pants, or another item of your choosing. Participants are required to bring in an item to sew your pocket to, the same type of fabric for your pocket (at least a 10" x 10" piece of material), scissors, needles, a ruler, pins and thread. There will be a limited supply of donated materials and tools available, but please bring anything extra that you have that you’d like to share with the group. All levels of sewers are welcome and encouraged to build community by sharing skills and promoting sustainability. This is a fun low-key social environment to enjoy an evening of slowing down, hand sewing and creative brainstorming. In partnership with Nine Ten Publications. Light refreshments will be available. --- Jess Driscoll is a writer and teacher who has been blogging since 2001. She lives on Semiahmoo land in the suburbs of Vancouver, BC. When she’s not sewing, she’s baking. When she’s not baking, she’s hiking. Through it all, she makes zines. The Magic of Pockets is her first published book of nonfiction. Follow the author at jessdriscoll.com. Nine Ten Publications is Canada's only independent press dedicated exclusively to publishing books and zines by Canadians about how to make things, how things are made, and why it matters. Under the leadership of publisher Kim Werker, Nine Ten is committed to sustainability and supporting the Canadian publishing ecosystem—every Nine Ten book and zine is printed in Canada on recycled paper. Find Nine Ten's books at your local bookstore, craft shop or public library, and learn more at ninetenpublications.ca.
